The fifth door pulsed with violet light, humming like a heartbeat. Arin and Lyra exchanged a glance, then stepped through.
They emerged into a vast chamber unlike any they'd seen. The walls were made of interlocking gears, each turning slowly, whispering fragments of time. In the center stood a massive clock face, cracked and glowing from within. Suspended in front of it was a figure - frozen mid-motion, arms outstretched, eyes closed.
"Elias," Lyra breathed.
Arin stepped forward, heart pounding. The clockmaker looked older than in the journal's sketches - his beard streaked with silver, his coat torn and stained. But even frozen, he radiated calm.
Lyra examined the gears. "He's trapped in a time loop. A moment that keeps repeating. We need to break it."
Arin opened the journal. The final pages had appeared, written in a hurried scrawl:
"If you've found me, then time is already unraveling. The shadow feeds on forgotten moments. It grows stronger with every breach. But there is hope."
"The maze holds a core - a seed of true time. If you reach it, you can reset the flow. But beware: the shadow guards it. And it knows you."
Suddenly, the gears groaned. The chamber darkened. A chill swept through the air.
From behind the clock face, the shadow emerged.
It was vast - a swirling mass of broken seconds, shattered memories, and flickering faces. Its voice was a thousand whispers.
"You cannot fix what is meant to break."
Lyra raised her chronometer. "We're not here to fix. We're here to choose."
The shadow lunged.
Arin grabbed Elias's hand. "Wake up!"
The clockmaker's eyes snapped open. Time surged around them. The gears spun faster, the chamber shook, and the shadow screamed.
Elias whispered, "You found me. But the maze isn't done. The core lies ahead. Only one of you can reach it."
Arin looked at Lyra. "What do you mean?"
Elias's voice was fading. "Time must choose a guardian. One to hold the flow steady. One to remember."
Lyra stepped forward. "Then let's finish this."
The chamber split open, revealing a staircase made of light, leading into the heart of the maze.
Arin took a deep breath. "For the village. For time. For us."
They climbed together, the shadow howling behind them, the gears singing their final song.
