Arin's fingers trembled as he turned the pages of Elias's journal. The handwriting was elegant but hurried, as if the clockmaker had written in a race against time itself.
"The tower is more than a machine. It is a gate. A fracture. A wound in time."
Arin's eyes widened. He flipped to the next page.
"I built it to protect the village. But something slipped through. Something that doesn't belong."
Suddenly, the gears around him began to hum. The floating cogs rotated slowly, casting flickering shadows across the walls. Arin stepped back, clutching the journal. The room felt alive.
He noticed a map pinned to the wall - an intricate diagram of the village, but with strange symbols etched around the edges. One symbol glowed faintly: a spiral with a dot in the center. Beneath it, Elias had written:
"The Spiral of Echoes. First breach point."
Arin didn't know what a breach point was, but he had a feeling he was standing in one.
He turned to leave, but the door had vanished. In its place was a shimmering curtain of light. Arin reached out - and the moment his fingers touched it, the world shifted.
He was no longer in the tower.
He stood in the village square, but it was different. The buildings were newer, the trees taller. People bustled around in strange clothes, speaking in a language he barely understood. A carriage rolled by without horses - metal and humming.
Arin stumbled backward. He had traveled through time.
Before he could panic, a voice spoke behind him.
"Not bad for your first jump."
Arin turned to see a girl about his age, wearing a jacket covered in gears and wires. Her eyes sparkled with curiosity.
"I'm Lyra," she said. "You must be Arin. Elias said you'd come."
Arin blinked. "You knew Elias?"
Lyra nodded. "He was my mentor. He built the tower to keep time from unraveling. But something went wrong. He disappeared before he could fix it."
Arin clutched the journal. "I found this. It mentioned a breach."
Lyra's face darkened. "There are many breaches. And something is hunting through them. If we don't seal them, time will collapse."
Arin's heart pounded. "How do we fix it?"
Lyra smiled faintly. "We start by finding Elias. He's lost in time. And we're going to bring him back."
