The gunshot echoed through the control room.
Victoria instinctively threw herself in front of Emily.
The impact spun her sideways.
She collapsed to one knee.
"Victoria!" Emily screamed.
For one terrifying second, Emily thought the bullet had struck her heart.
Then she saw the blood spreading across Victoria's left arm.
The bullet had torn through her upper arm.
Pain shot through Victoria's body, but she forced herself back to her feet.
"I'm okay..."
"It missed."
Volkov smiled coldly.
"I rarely miss."
"I simply wanted you to understand what it feels like to lose someone."
Emily's eyes filled with anger.
"You'll never understand love."
"No," Volkov replied calmly.
"I learned long ago that fear is far more reliable."
The countdown echoed through the room.
Four minutes remaining.
Walker shouted through the radio.
"Emily! Status!"
Emily pressed the transmitter.
"We found Volkov!"
"And the master switch!"
Walker answered immediately.
"Then finish it!"
Volkov fired again.
The bullet struck the wall behind Emily.
Concrete exploded into the room.
Victoria tackled Volkov before he could fire a third shot.
The two crashed into a metal console.
His pistol slid across the floor.
Emily lunged toward it.
Volkov grabbed Victoria by the throat.
"You should have stayed cold."
Victoria struggled to breathe.
"My mother..."
"...taught me something."
She drove her elbow into his ribs.
"...love makes us stronger."
Volkov stumbled backward.
Emily caught the pistol and pointed it directly at him.
"It's over."
Volkov looked at her.
"No."
He smiled.
"It's only changing."
Without warning, he slammed his hand against a red emergency button beside the door.
Steel shutters crashed down between him and the others.
He disappeared into a maintenance tunnel as the barrier sealed shut.
Emily fired twice.
Too late.
He was gone.
Three minutes remaining.
Emily rushed to Victoria.
Blood covered her sleeve.
"We need to stop the bleeding."
Victoria shook her head.
"Later."
"The switch."
Emily looked toward the control panel.
She grabbed the large steel lever and pulled it down with all her strength.
The room shook violently.
Lights flickered.
The computerized voice echoed one final time.
Explosive sequence aborted.
System offline.
Silence.
The countdown disappeared.
Emily let out a long breath.
"We did it."
Minutes later, Walker, Gabriel, Luca and Father Michael entered the control room.
Father Michael immediately walked to Victoria.
"My child..."
Victoria smiled weakly.
"I've had worse."
Gabriel embraced her carefully, trying not to hurt her injured arm.
"I just got you back."
"I'm not leaving again."
Victoria kissed his forehead.
"Never."
The emergency teams arrived within minutes.
A paramedic wrapped Victoria's arm.
"It went straight through."
"You'll recover."
Emily remained beside her the entire time.
She never let go of Victoria's hand.
Walker noticed.
So did Gabriel.
Neither of them said a word.
Later that night...
The sun was setting over the Hudson River.
The crisis was over.
For now.
Victoria stood alone on the balcony of the safe house, her arm in a sling.
Emily quietly joined her.
"You should be resting."
Victoria smiled.
"So should you."
They laughed softly.
For the first time in weeks...
There were no gunshots.
No alarms.
Only the sound of the wind.
Emily looked out across the water.
"When you stepped in front of that bullet..."
Victoria interrupted gently.
"I didn't think."
"I couldn't lose you."
Emily turned toward her.
Tears shimmered in her eyes.
"You almost did."
Victoria stepped closer.
"So did you."
They stood only inches apart.
No walls.
No masks.
No fear.
Emily slowly reached up and brushed a loose strand of hair away from Victoria's face.
Victoria leaned into the touch.
"I've been trying to fight this," Emily whispered.
"So have I," Victoria replied.
Emily smiled.
"I don't want to fight anymore."
"Neither do I."
Their foreheads touched.
For a long moment, neither moved.
Then, slowly, Emily closed the distance between them.
Their lips met in a soft, gentle kiss.
It wasn't rushed.
It wasn't driven by passion.
It was quiet.
Tender.
A promise more than anything else.
When they finally pulled apart, they rested their foreheads together.
Victoria smiled.
"I've dreamed about doing that..."
"...for longer than I want to admit."
Emily laughed softly.
"I was beginning to think you'd never make the first move."
Before either of them could say another word, Gabriel stepped onto the balcony.
He stopped instantly.
A grin spread across his face.
"I guess I interrupted something."
Victoria laughed for the first time in years.
"You definitely did."
Gabriel smiled warmly.
"It's about time."
For the first time since the story began...
Hope outweighed fear.
But miles away, Adrian Volkov stood inside an abandoned train depot, staring at a map of New York.
He touched one location with his finger.
A place marked only with one word.
ECLIPSE.
"You've won the battle," he whispered.
"But the war..."
"...belongs to me."
