Night descended upon the ring-world of Aurelia with breathtaking, luminous grace.
The two turquoise suns had dipped below the outer rim, leaving only the primary golden star casting a soft, twilight ember across the inland oceans.
High above the clouds, inside the Imperial Solarium of the Sun-Emperor, the quiet was broken only by the gentle murmuring of hanging starlight orchids and the steady, rhythmic breathing of two lovers tangled together upon a bed of midnight silk.
Seraphina lay draped across Kaelen’s bare, scarred chest.
Her head rested over the steady, powerful thrum of his heart, one leg tangled between his muscular thighs.
The silver moonlight streaming through the transparent crystal dome illuminated the sharp lines of his jaw and the intricate web of battle-scars crossing his broad shoulders.
His large, calloused hand stroked lazily down her bare spine, his fingers tracing each vertebra with a possessive, tender familiarity that made her skin tingle with lingering heat.
Her golden crescent mark at the base of her throat hummed faintly, glowing with an unusual, icy violet tint.
"You're not sleeping, little sun," Kaelen rumbled softly, his deep baritone vibrating against her ear.
He tilted her chin up with his thumb, his molten silver eyes searching hers in the dim starlight.
"The coronation is over. The fleet is holding the perimeter. What troubles your mind?"
"The silence," Seraphina murmured, leaning into his touch, her fingers resting flat against his collarbone.
"When Malakor fell at the Kuiper Gate, and when the Gorgon broke in the skies today... it felt too fast. The Ashen Maw fought for ten thousand years to breach our realm. They wouldn't break this easily unless something else was drawing their strength."
Before Kaelen could reply, the temperature inside the heated solarium plummeted to absolute zero.
Hsssss.
Frost webbed outward across the silk sheets in jagged, crystalline fractals. The blooming starlight orchids along the terrace withered into black ash, their glowing petals freezing solid before crumbling to dust.
Kaelen’s reflexes were instantaneous.
In a heartbeat, he flipped them, shielding Seraphina beneath his body as his eighty-foot shadow-wings snapped open like an impenetrable dome of dark-matter.
He reached for Gloom-Weaver leaning against the headboard, his silver eyes flashing with deadly, sovereign wrath.
"Seraphina..." a voice breathed through the freezing air.
It was not a sound heard with ears.
It was an ancient, seductive psychic vibration that bypassed physical shields, echoing straight inside the marrow of their bones. It sounded like ten million dying stars whispering in unison, dripping with cold, necrotic sorrow.
In the center of the solarium, the ambient starlight twisted into a sickening vortex of violet anti-matter.
From the shadows emerged an ethereal phantom: a towering, regal figure draped in robes woven from collapsed galaxies.
Her face was concealed behind a polished mask of weeping black mirror-glass, from which wept tears of burning green plasma.
The Void-Mother, Queen of the Infinite Abyss.
"My straying children," the apparition murmured, her mirrored face turning toward the bed.
"You celebrate upon the bones of an empire already marked for the harvest. You believe you rekindled the dawn... but you merely struck a match inside the mouth of a wolf."
"Get out of our sanctuary, abomination!" Kaelen snarled, rising from the bed, his dark-matter aura erupting into a violent storm of violet lightning that filled the solarium.
He swung Gloom-Weaver in a sweeping arc, but the dark-matter blade passed harmlessly through the phantom, rippling her image like smoke.
"Anger will not save your realm, little prince of shadows," the Void-Mother whispered, her chilling gaze shifting entirely to Seraphina.
"And you, daughter of the First Dawn... your blood is sweet, but your light is finite. Look to the Core of Tartarus. While you played at kings and queens in Aurelia, my true armada has unsealed the World-Eater."
The apparition raised a pale, shadowy hand.
In her palm swirled a horrific vision: a gargantuan, cosmic leviathan sleeping inside a dark nebula beyond the galaxy’s edge, its jaws wide enough to swallow solar systems whole, stirring as its ancient chains shattered one by one.
"Come to Tartarus, High Queen," the whisper faded into the chilling wind. "Come... and watch your dawn die."
The vortex snapped shut.
The frost evaporated in an instant, returning the warm cedar air of the ring-world, but the terrifying chill lingered in their veins.
Seraphina sat up, her breath coming in rapid, shallow bursts, her amber eyes wide as she met Kaelen’s darkened gaze.
"She wasn't trying to breach Aurelia," Seraphina whispered, her fingers curling tightly around his forearm. "She was baiting us."
Kaelen’s jaw tightened into merciless stone. He pulled her hard against his chest, his lips pressing a fierce, protective kiss to her temple.
"Then let us take the bait, my Queen," Kaelen rumbled, his silver eyes burning with lethal, unyielding resolve. "And butcher her beast."
