TheSol-Invictusdropped out of deep etheric slipstream into the bleeding outer fringe of the galaxy.
Here, far beyond the warmth of Aurelia’s triple suns, lay theDark Nebula of Tartarus—a churning, cosmic graveyard of crushed dead stars, weeping spatial rifts, and poisonous violet nebular dust that suffocated conventional navigation.
Through the three-story diamond-glass viewport of the command bridge, the vista was terrifying in its absolute desolation.
The void did not sparkle with distant pinpricks of starlight.
Instead, the sky was a swirling, bruise-colored vortex of abyssal gas. Drifting within the thick clouds were the ancient, hollowed carcasses of dead proto-planets, chained together by hundreds of colossal iron conduits that pulsed with sickening green anti-matter.
"The astral navigational beacons are dead," General Aurelius reported grimly from the lower tactical ring.
His armored fingers adjusted the holographic sensors, his rugged brow furrowed with deep tension.
"The spatial compression inside this nebula is ten times standard cosmic density. Our etheric fold-drives are locked out. If we enter the inner core, we fly blind on manual thrusters."
"Then we fly on instinct," Seraphina said, stepping to the forward rail.
Her white dragon-scale armor gleamed against the eerie violet twilight outside.
Her twenty-foot wings of starlight fluttered softly against her back, their golden feathers casting a warm, protective halo across the command deck.
TheScepter of the Astral Sovereignwas holstered at her hip, humming in low, rhythmic harmony with her awakened Sunblood.
"The Void-Mother wanted us here, Aurelius. She won't let us lose the trail."
A heavy, familiar weight settled against her side.
Kaelen Vance stood beside her, his broad shoulders squared against the dark expanse.
TheObsidian Ring of the Void-Consorton his left hand pulsed with jagged arcs of cold violet lightning, feeding directly on the ambient gravity distortions of the nebula.
His molten silver eyes were narrowed into predatory slits, tracking the rhythmic etheric pulses throbbing from the nebula’s center.
"Listen," Kaelen rumbled quietly, his deep baritone carrying an edge of primal recognition.
Seraphina closed her eyes, focusing her senses past the hum of the ship’s sub-light engines.
Through the void-plating of the hull, she felt it: a deep, sub-atomic vibration that bypassed sound and resonated directly in her chest.
Thump... thump... thump.
It was a heartbeat, vast and agonizingly slow, each pulse displacing enough gravity to bend the trajectory of nearby asteroids.
"TheWorld-Eater," Kaelen whispered, his hand coming to rest firmly over hers on the rail, his fingers weaving between hers with steadying, possessive strength.
"Its true name isJormungandr-Null, the Primordial Leviathan of the First Void. When the cosmos was young, the gods could not destroy it. They forged twelve adamantine star-chains, anchoring its sleeping body to the mantle of Tartarus."
"And the Void-Mother’s forces are breaking those chains," Seraphina finished, her amber eyes snapping open with fierce, clinical urgency.
"Sensor contact!" the tactical officer shouted suddenly.
The three-dimensional battle-hololith flashed crimson.
Emerging from the dense violet clouds ahead were thirty colossalAbyssal Harvesters—gargantuan, crustacean-like dreadnoughts of black soul-iron, each deploying multi-mile adamantine mining drills into the surface of an iron planetoid.
Hovering above the planetoid was the first of the legendaryStar-Chains—a five-hundred-mile link of glowing white celestial metal, currently groaning under the assault of hundreds of anti-matter cutting beams.
Four of the twelve links were already severed, floating as dead slag in the toxic gas.
"Eight chains remain," Aurelius warned, drawing his broadsword. "If three more break, the beast’s neural cortex will achieve consciousness."
Seraphina turned to Kaelen, her amber eyes blazing with sovereign fire.
"We split the assault," she said, her voice ringing with absolute authority.
"TheSol-Invictusand the fleet will engage the harvesters and disrupt the cutting beams. You and I drop directly onto the planetary mantle to secure the primary chain anchor."
Kaelen’s lips curled into that dangerous, breathtaking smirk.
He pulled her flush against his chest, his arms locking around her waist, their breath mingling in the tense, charged air of the bridge.
"An orbital drop straight into the jaws of Tartarus," Kaelen purred against her lips, his silver eyes flashing with feral delight. "You truly know how to treat a sovereign, my Queen."
He kissed her hard—a fierce, bruising claim that sealed their purpose—before their dual auras erupted in a blinding flash of dawn and shadow.
Together, they leaped from the forward gantry, diving headfirst into the toxic clouds of the dark nebula.
