The echoes of the solar pillar had faded from the Grand Hall, but the tension in the Citadel remained thicker than the sulfurous mists rising from Mount Dread's subterranean calderas.
The high lords had dispersed into the shadowy corridors of the keep, their haughty arrogance replaced by hushed, terrified murmurs. Seraphina Cross had not only proven her lineage; she had shattered five millennia of stagnant tradition with three drops of incandescent blood.
In the secluded royal gallery on the western spire, Seraphina stood leaning against a balustrade of cold black iron, staring out at the twin moons. The wind whipped her auburn hair across her face, cooling the feverish heat still humming beneath her skin.
A heavy, fur-lined cloak of midnight velvet draped softly over her shoulders, carrying the familiar, intoxicating scent of cedar, crushed cloves, and raw ozone.
She didn't need to look back to know he was there.
Kaelen stepped beside her, resting his forearms against the iron railing. His massive wings were drawn tight against his back, casting deep shadows across the stone floor. He had removed his heavy dragon-steel gauntlets, and for the first time since she had met him, his bare hands were on display—scarred, lethal, with sharp, darkened nails that spoke of ancient, predatory lineage.
"You took a reckless gamble on that altar," Kaelen said softly, his voice devoid of royal grandeur, leaving only the rough, intimate rasp of an ancient warrior.
"I don't cower behind shields, Kaelen," she replied, her amber eyes reflecting the pale moonlight. "If I'm going to survive in this realm, your lords need to understand that I am not your pet."
A low, rumbling chuckle rumbled in his chest, vibrating through the space between them. He turned his head to watch her profile, his molten silver eyes lingering on the curve of her throat and the faint golden glow that still pulsed beneath her collarbone.
"They understand," he murmured, his tone dropping into a possessive purr that sent a shiver racing across her spine. "I saw the fear in Malakor's eyes. You brought the proudest warlords of the Seven Spheres to their knees without drawing a single blade."
"It doesn't change the fact that they hate me," she said, pulling the cloak tighter around her chest. "I saw their faces, Kaelen. They look at me like a loaded bomb waiting to detonate their world."
"Let them hate you," Kaelen said coldly, stepping closer until his broad shoulder brushed hers. "Hatred breeds caution. Fear breeds obedience. But you must not drop your guard. Malakor was only a mouthpiece. The true threat to our realm does not sit openly in the council."
Seraphina glanced up at him, her brow furrowing. "The Void-Hunters you mentioned in Chicago?"
Kaelen's expression hardened into grim stone. "Worse. The fracture on Navy Pier was not an accident, Seraphina. The wards that anchor the Veil between the mortal world and the Seven Spheres are maintained by seven ancient celestial engines buried deep within the core of each realm. The engine beneath Mount Dread... is failing."
Seraphina's breath caught. "Failing? How?"
"It is being siphoned," Kaelen said, his hand reaching out to gently touch the silver mark on her forehead, his fingers warm and rough against her skin. "There is a faction lurking in the deep rifts—the Court of the Ashen Maw. They believe that by shattering the Veil entirely, they can harvest the raw, unfiltered entropy of the mortal realm to resurrect the Primordial Void."
The air between them grew heavy, the bond thrumming with shared foreboding.
"They targeted Chicago because they sensed your emergence," Kaelen continued, his thumb tracing the delicate line of her jawline, tilting her face upward until her amber gaze locked with his silver fire. "You are the Sun-Heir, Seraphina. Your fire is the only force capable of reigniting the celestial engines and sealing the rifts."
"And if I fail?" she whispered, her voice barely carrying over the wind.
Kaelen leaned down, his lips brushing the shell of her pointed ear, his breath hot against her neck.
"You will not fail," he growled fiercely, his arm sliding around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. "Because I will tear through every army in the Seven Spheres before I let them touch a single hair on your head."
