The declaration hung in the frozen air of the hall like an unsheathed blade.
Your future Queen.
The silence was so absolute that the faint dripping of cold ether from the ceiling sounded like hammer blows against the stone. Malakor slid down the pillar as Kaelen released his gravitational grip, gasping for air on his hands and knees, his silver dusk-silk soaked in sweat.
"A Sun-Heir?"
The voice that broke the stillness did not come from Malakor, but from the far end of the council table. Lady Vespera, High Inquisitor of the Shadow Archives, stepped forward. Her skin was as dark as polished onyx, her eyes entirely pupil-less pools of liquid amethyst. Unlike the blustering lords, her expression was cool, calculating, and ancient.
"The Sunblood line was supposedly erased five millennia ago at the Fall of Caelum," Vespera said, her long, clawed fingers resting atop an ancient tome bound in leviathan hide. "If she is what our Sovereign claims, her blood carries the primal ignition capable of either healing the Veil... or burning our mountain to cinder."
She turned her gaze to Seraphina, the amethyst light in her eyes flaring with assessing intensity. "A claim of sovereign lineage cannot simply be declared by royal decree, my King. The Rite of the Blood Altar is law. The stone must taste her fire."
"She will not bleed for your satisfaction, Inquisitor," Kaelen growled, his hand resting on the hilt of Gloom-Weaver, his wings flaring with warning shadows.
"I will."
Seraphina stepped out from beneath the protective shadow of Kaelen's wing. Her jaw was set, her amber eyes burning with a defiance that silenced the room anew. She turned to look up at Kaelen, her pulse hammering against her ribs, but her expression unyielding.
"I didn't ask to be brought here, Kaelen," she said, her voice carrying clearly across the hall. "And I won't have your court whispering that I hide behind your wings. If they need proof, I’ll give it to them."
Kaelen’s silver eyes locked onto hers, dark, turbulent, and thick with reluctant respect. The bond between them hummed like a plucked wire—a fierce resonance of pride and possessive dread. He gave a single, curt nod, stepping aside to grant her the floor.
In the center of the amphitheater floor stood the Altar of the First King—a circular slab of volcanic basalt carved with the ancient glyphs of the Seven Spheres. At its heart sat a bowl of unmelting obsidian ice, untouched by flame for five thousand years.
Vespera produced a slender ritual dagger forged from blackened silver. She extended the hilt toward Seraphina with a curt bow. "Three drops upon the ice, child of the dawn. If you are false, the frost will turn your blood to glass and stop your heart. If you are true..."
Seraphina took the blade without hesitation. The metal was ice-cold against her fingers, but the heat surging through her veins laughed at the chill.
She stood before the altar, rolling up the left sleeve of her battle-tunic. With a swift, practiced motion learned from years of emergency medicine, she drew the silver edge across her palm.
A crimson line bloomed.
The blood that welled from her skin was not merely red; it sparkled with flecks of molten gold, radiating a sudden, blinding heat that sent waves of shimmer through the cold air.
She turned her hand, letting three drops fall into the bowl of unmelting ice.
Drip. Drip. Drip.
The moment the golden blood struck the frozen surface, the world went white.
A column of pure, thermonuclear solar fire erupted from the altar, blasting through the roof of the grand hall and screaming into the night sky of Mount Dread. The unmelting ice didn't just melt—it flash-vaporized, sending a shockwave of golden light rolling through the amphitheater that forced every high lord and shadow-sorceress to shield their eyes in terror.
The glyphs of the Seven Spheres along the walls ignited one by one, blazing with long-dormant golden resonance.
High above, the mountain shivered in joyous recognition.
When the blinding glare subsided, Seraphina stood at the center of the smoking altar, her wound already sealed by her Sunblood. Behind her, her golden wings were fully unfurled, twenty feet of incandescent, crystalline fire that illuminated every corner of the dark hall.
Vespera fell to both knees, her forehead touching the scorched floor.
"The Sun has returned to Mount Dread," the Inquisitor whispered in awe.
Across the amphitheater, one by one, the proud warlords of the Night Court bowed their heads in stunned, terrified submission.
Kaelen stepped to the edge of the altar. A slow, savage smile curved his lips, his silver eyes drinking in the sight of her radiance.
"I told you," he murmured, his deep voice carrying over the kneeling court. "She burns gods."
