The promise lingered in the frozen air long after the mountain wind carried Kaelen’s words into the night.
Seraphina didn't pull away from his embrace. For a fleeting heartbeat, the intoxicating warmth of his chest against her front was the only anchor keeping her grounded in a world that had spun out of all human reason. But the fierce, independent fire in her blood refused to let her drown in his gravity.
With a slow, deliberate movement, she rested her palm against the center of his chest, feeling the heavy, rhythmic thud of his ancient heart before gently stepping back.
"Don't make promises you might have to die to keep, Vance," she said softly, though the breathlessness in her voice betrayed the tremor humming through her veins.
A slow, wicked grin touched Kaelen’s lips, his molten silver eyes flashing with dark amusement as his arm reluctantly released her waist. "I have died three times in seven centuries, my Queen. It has never stopped me from taking what is mine."
He turned, gesturing toward a winding spiral staircase carved from pale, translucent moonstone that descended into the southern wing of the Citadel. "Walk with me. There is something you need to see before we descend to the engine."
Seraphina hesitated for only a second before following his long, predatory strides.
They descended deep into the interior of the fortress, bypassing the grand halls and militarized guard barracks until they reached a set of towering gates wrought from living, thorned ironwood. Kaelen pressed his palm against the center latch; the iron thorns recoiled with a soft hiss, swinging inward to reveal a sight that stole the air from her chest.
It was a subterranean sanctuary suspended over an immense natural cavern: The Garden of Lunar Glass.
Unlike the fiery volcanic depths or the stark obsidian stone of the upper Citadel, this secluded haven was an ethereal paradise of nocturnal life. Massive weeping willows with leaves of spun silver silk cascaded over paths of crushed black quartz. Pools of bioluminescent lavender water mirrored the faint glow of luminescent moss clinging to the stalactites above. In the center of the garden grew thousands of night-blooming orchids whose petals were spun from pure crystalline glass, releasing a fragrance that tasted of crushed berries, sweet nectar, and petrichor.
"What is this place?" Seraphina breathed, stepping onto the path. The ambient cold of the fortress vanished, replaced by a humid, velvety warmth that made her skin tingle.
"My sanctuary," Kaelen answered, walking beside her, his wings folded neatly against his back. "Created by my mother before the Severance Wars. When the shadow-rage within our bloodline threatens to consume us, this garden provides balance. It is the only place in Mount Dread where life grows without the need for battle."
Seraphina reached out, her fingertips gently brushing the crystalline petal of an orchid. The moment her skin touched the glass, her Sunblood reacted instinctively.
A pulse of warm, golden light bled from her fingertips into the blossom.
The glass orchid didn't shatter; it bloomed wider, its translucent petals drinking in the solar energy and blushing with a delicate, fiery amber hue. The golden light rippled through the roots, spreading through the soil until the entire flowerbed glowed with radiant, synchronized warmth.
Kaelen stopped in his tracks, staring down at the transformed flowers. His breath hitched, his jaw tightening as an emotion so raw, so vulnerable it bordered on reverence flashed across his scarred features.
"In five hundred years," he said, his voice dropping to a rough, gravelly whisper, "I have never seen these flowers take color. They have only ever known twilight."
Seraphina looked up from the glowing petals, her amber eyes catching the stunned intensity in his silver gaze. The distance between them shrank with an inevitable, magnetic pull. Kaelen closed the gap, his tall frame blocking the glowing flora around them until the only world left was the heat radiating between their bodies.
His hand reached out, his fingers tangling into her auburn hair, tilting her head back. His thumb traced the lower curve of her lip, his breath hot against her mouth.
"You bring the dawn wherever you step, Seraphina," Kaelen murmured, his voice thick with unbridled desire. "And I am starving for your light."
