The Grand Hall of the Obsidian Spire was not designed for diplomacy; it was an amphitheater built to intimidate gods.
Carved from a single volcanic monolith deep within the mountain's roots, the chamber soared hundreds of paces into gloom, supported by gargantuan obsidian pillars weeping ribbons of cold, bioluminescent violet ether. Along the tiered balconies sat the aristocracy of Mount Dread: high fae warlords clad in black dragon-scale, dusk-sorceresses whose gowns trailed living shadows, and pale-eyed sentinels wielding lances of frozen void-glass.
When the massive iron doors groaned open, every conversation died instantly into a suffocating, hostile silence.
Seraphina walked down the central aisle of polished dark stone, refusing to lower her gaze.
She had refused the delicate court silks the attendants had brought to her quarters. Instead, she wore a tailored battle-tunic of reinforced black leather layered over gold-threaded mesh, her combat boots clicking rhythmically against the stone. At her hips rested two curved daggers forged from sunstone crystal—gifts she had demanded before stepping out of Kaelen's private chambers. Behind her shoulder blades, her dormant golden wings remained drawn tight, a hum of radioactive warmth simmering beneath her skin.
At the dais at the far end of the hall sat the Obsidian Throne.
Kaelen Vance occupied it not as the brooding, teasing warrior from the bedchamber, but as an absolute monarch. He was clad from neck to boot in his ancestral black dragon-steel plate. His heavy fur cloak rested across broad shoulders, and his eighty-foot shadow-wings were fanned outward behind the seat of state, their dark-matter feathers casting a terrifying, physical gravity across the entire lower hall. In his right hand rested Gloom-Weaver, its dark tip planted into the stone between his greaves.
His molten silver eyes watched Seraphina’s approach with cold, impassive majesty, though the faint pulse of the bond humming in her chest betrayed the possessive intensity raging beneath his stone exterior.
"Is this the mortal stray our High Sovereign risked an inter-dimensional war to retrieve?"
The venomous sneer came from the first tier. High Lord Malakor stepped forward, his frame lean and serpentine, draped in robes of silver dusk-silk. His pointed ears were pierced with bone rings, and his gaze raked over Seraphina with open, mocking disgust.
"She reeks of iron, smog, and fragile mortal flesh," Malakor hissed, turning toward the assembled lords. "The wards of Mount Dread were breached because our King chased an abomination across the Veil. By the ancient laws of the Night Court, an unsanctioned half-blood found within the Citadel must be bled upon the altar to cleanse the shame!"
A low murmur of agreement rippled through the gallery.
Seraphina didn't wait for Kaelen to defend her.
She stepped onto the center of the dais, stopping ten paces from Malakor. Her amber eyes narrowed into cold, lethal slits. "If you think I'm fragile, Lord Malakor, why don't you step down from that balcony and draw your blade?"
A startled gasp echoed across the court.
Malakor’s pale face flushed crimson with humiliation. "Insolent wench! I am a lord of seven centuries—"
"And you talk like a dog barking from behind a fence," Seraphina cut him off, her voice ringing clear and commanding across the cavernous room.
Before Malakor could draw his rapier, Kaelen moved.
The High Sovereign didn't rise from his throne; he simply slammed the pommel of Gloom-Weaver against the dais floor.
A concussive shockwave of pure void-gravity erupted through the hall. Malakor was torn from his feet, slammed back-first into the obsidian pillar behind him, pinned there by an invisible, bone-crushing force that made him choke on his own spit.
"Mind your tongue, Malakor," Kaelen rumbled, his voice shaking the mountain's foundations. The temperature in the hall plunged to near freezing, his silver eyes blazing with sovereign fury. "You are speaking to your future Queen."
The entire court fell dead silent. Even Seraphina stiffened, her gaze snapping toward Kaelen as the weight of his declaration settled over the hall like an iron shroud.
"She is not a stray," Kaelen stood, descending the dais steps until he stood at Seraphina's flank, his massive wing draping protectively behind her back. "She is the Sun-Heir. The twin star of Mount Dread. And if any lord among you wishes to question her right to this court... you will answer to my blade first."
