The resonance between them exploded with the fury of a supernova.
As Kaelen’s abyssal gravity flooded Seraphina’s veins through their mate-bond, the golden light of her Sunblood did not merely merge with the shadow—it evolved.
Her twenty-foot wings of starlight shifted into an intoxicating, iridescent aurora of midnight-violet and blinding white-gold plasma. The air around the 103rd floor grew so dense with pressurized ether that the rain blowing through the shattered windows froze into suspended, floating droplets of crystal.
At the center of the deck, Azgorath’s eyes widened with genuine, horrifying realization.
"The Dual Eclipse..." the warlord choked out, his three hands trembling as he struggled to pull his blade from Kaelen’s bleeding, iron grip. "The primordial prophecy... it cannot be..."
"It can," Kaelen snarled, his voice vibrating with absolute dark-matter dominance.
With a brutal twist of his bloody gauntlet, Kaelen snapped the ancient soul-iron broadsword clean in half. Before Azgorath could react, Kaelen lunged forward, driving the blunt pommel of Gloom-Weaver directly into the titan's throat, staggering the twelve-foot beast backward into the reinforced central pillar.
Across the deck, Seraphina stood before the pulsing World-Breaker Spike.
Her hands were engulfed in a swirling vortex of dual-aspect energy—shadow-matter condensing the localized space while solar plasma superheated the inner frequency.
She drove both of her glowing hands straight into the device’s core housing.
The dark-matter lattice that had protected the machinery parted like water before Kaelen’s gravitational signature. Her fingers sank through the enchanted steel, wrapping directly around the glowing, viridian spite-crystal driving the subterranean drill.
"For Caelum," Seraphina whispered, her amber eyes burning with ancestral vengeance. "And for Chicago!"
She unleashed the full, unbridled fury of her power.
A blinding pulse of celestial dawn cascaded into the core. The emerald spite-crystal screamed, a high-pitched, shattering shriek that vibrated through every steel girder of the Willis Tower.
The necrotic energy did not detonate outward—Kaelen’s channeled gravity collapsed the blast inward upon itself, crushing the toxic explosion into a microscopic singularity that imploded with a dull, concussive whump.
The viridian veins crawling up the skyscraper’s beams flickered, withered, and dissolved into harmless gray ash.
Down in the depths of the earth, the subterranean drill ceased its drilling. The terrifying, apocalyptic rumble in the bedrock smoothed into silence, the ancient vault of the Ninth Sphere re-locking beneath the foundations of the city.
Across the ruined floor, the severed machinery of the Spike fell apart in smoking, useless chunks of slag.
"No!" Azgorath roared, falling to his knees as the backlash of his broken weapon tore through his etheric channels. Black blood poured from his nose and mouth, his remaining hands scrabbling desperately against the shattered floor tiles. "The Void-Mother... the harvest..."
A towering shadow fell over the defeated warlord.
Kaelen stepped out of the swirling mist, Gloom-Weaver resting loose in his right hand. His silver eyes were devoid of mercy, his black dragon-steel armor spattered with gore, his wings flared wide like the shroud of death itself.
Behind him, Seraphina walked forward, her sunstone daggers drawn and resting calmly at her sides, her radiant aurora illuminating the bloody scene.
"Your army is broken, Azgorath," Seraphina said, her voice clear, cold, and absolute. "Your breach is closed. There is nothing left of you in this realm."
Azgorath looked up at them, his broken, fanged maw parting in a defiant, bloody sneer.
"Kill me, then," the titan wheezed, spitting a mouthful of black bile onto Kaelen’s boots. "My death will not stop the harvest. The other five rifts are already waking across the mortal world. The Maw... will feast... upon your flesh..."
"Let them try," Kaelen rumbled.
With a single, effortless motion, Kaelen swept Gloom-Weaver horizontally.
The dark-matter edge cleaved through the warlord’s neck with surgical, final perfection.
Azgorath’s horned head rolled across the glass-strewn floor, coming to rest at the edge of the observation ledge, before his massive, armored corpse collapsed forward with a heavy, final thud.
Silence descended upon the 103rd floor, broken only by the gentle pitter-patter of the clearing rain.
Kaelen turned to Seraphina.
The lethal tension in his chiseled face vanished, replaced by an expression of raw, breathless reverence. He dropped his broadsword to the floor, crossing the space between them in two swift strides. He pulled her against his broad, armored chest, his arms wrapping around her waist with possessive, trembling intensity.
Seraphina let out a long, ragged breath, burying her face in the crook of his neck, her arms locking around his shoulders as the adrenaline drained from her limbs.
"We stopped it," she whispered against his skin.
"You stopped it, little sun," Kaelen growled softly, his lips pressing a fierce, lingering kiss against her temple. "You saved your world."
Outside the shattered windows, the clouds over Lake Michigan began to part, revealing the first golden rays of the true morning sun.
