The wind shrieked through the shattered glass of the 103rd floor, whipping torrential rain across the blood-slicked observation deck.
A hundred stories above Chicago, the iconic glass ledges that once held laughing tourists were now spattered with black ichor and charred concrete. In the center of the vast pavilion, the World-Breaker Spike thrummed with catastrophic power, driving thick, luminous veins of viridian corruption straight down the skyscraper's central elevator core.
The entire tower groaned, swaying three feet off-center in the howling gale as deep underground, the bedrock began to tear.
Warlord Azgorath stood over the pulsing device, twelve feet of scarred muscle and scorched colossus-plate. From behind his broken iron helm, his four slit-eyes burned with unhinged, feral triumph.
"You cross the Veil for cattle, Vance?" Azgorath mocked, his deep voice an avalanche of grinding gravel. "You bring the entire sovereign host to a mudball of fragile mortals? Look around you! Their structures are glass. Their bodies are paper. They cannot survive the breath of the Void-Mother!"
"This world produced my Queen," Kaelen rumbled, stepping forward across the crunchy field of shattered safety glass.
His eighty-foot shadow-wings arched forward in a predatory wall of dark matter, the temperature on the deck plummeting to absolute zero as his boots cracked the floor tiles. Gloom-Weaver hissed with unstable abyssal lightning.
"And that makes it sacred ground."
"Then let it be your graveyard!" Azgorath roared, tearing his executioner’s blade from the floor and lunging forward.
The clash shook the entire 103rd floor.
Azgorath brought his jagged broadsword down in an overhead cleave that would have sliced a tank in half. Kaelen met it with Gloom-Weaver, the kinetic shockwave of dragon-steel on soul-iron blowing out the remaining interior drywall and sending acoustic tiles raining down like confetti.
Sparks showered Kaelen’s face as he braced against the titan’s sheer mass, his molten silver eyes locking with Azgorath’s burning slits just inches apart.
"Seraphina, the Spike!" Kaelen gritted out through clenched teeth, his muscles bulging as he held the warlord’s descending edge. "Shatter the power couplings before it reaches the foundation!"
"On it!"
Seraphina moved like living lightning. She vaulted over an overturned souvenir counter, her twenty-foot solar wings snapping open to propel her across the slick tile.
Three Void-Weavers concealed within the ceiling crawlspace dropped into her path, their hands crackling with necrotic rot.
Seraphina didn't even slow down. She drew her white sunstone daggers, ducking under a spray of corrosive acid and spinning in a blinding, low pirouette. Her twin blades flashed in synchronized, superheated arcs, decapitating two sorcerers in a heartbeat, their bodies turning to ash before they hit the ground.
The third weaver raised a barrier of black bone-glass, but Seraphina drove her glowing palm straight through the ward. Her Sunblood flared in a surgical, five-thousand-degree burst that vaporized both the shield and the sorcerer’s chest.
She reached the base of the World-Breaker Spike.
The device was an abomination of soul-iron and pulsing emerald crystal, anchored into the primary structural girders by four massive hydraulic clamps. The subterranean hum vibrating through the steel was sickening—she could feel the ancient, sleeping entity miles beneath the city stirring in response to the drill.
"The core is shielded by a dark-matter lattice," Seraphina shouted back over the din of battle, examining the glowing runes. "I can't pierce it with solar fire alone without detonating the entire floor!"
Across the room, Azgorath threw his massive bulk into Kaelen, his shattered, dangling arm forgotten as his remaining two hands gripped his sword hilt, hammering Kaelen through a load-bearing column.
"You cannot stop the drill, half-blood!" Azgorath bellowed, laughing madly as he raised his blade to skewer Kaelen through the chest. "The seal is already cracked!"
Kaelen didn't flinch.
Instead of raising his sword to parry, Kaelen reached out with his bare, gauntleted left hand and clamped his fingers directly around Azgorath’s descending blade. The razor steel bit deep into his palm, dark crimson blood hissing as it touched the soul-iron, but Kaelen didn't even blink.
His silver eyes blazed with terrifying, absolute sovereign authority.
"I don't need to stop the drill," Kaelen growled, a feral, blood-soaked smile pulling at his lips as his dark-matter gravity surged through the warlord's blade. "I only need to give my Queen the spark."
Through the mate-bond, Kaelen channeled every ounce of his abyssal gravity straight into Seraphina’s soul.
Across the deck, Seraphina felt the dark, delicious chill of his power flood her veins, perfectly counterbalancing the burning furnace of her Sunblood.
"Now, Seraphina!" Kaelen’s voice echoed in her mind. "Break their world!"
