The storm clouds over Lake Michigan broke into wisps of violet and rose, shattered by the rising mortal sun.
One hundred and three stories above the waking metropolis, the wind blowing through the shattered glass of the Skydeck had lost its sulfur bite, carrying the crisp, clean scent of fresh lake water and autumn dawn. Below, the sirens of Chicago still echoed through the concrete canyons, but the wail was no longer a prelude to annihilation; it was the frantic, astonished recovery of a city that had survived the apocalypse.
Across the vast lakefront, the surviving Ashen Maw stragglers were being systematically eradicated.
The five thousand dragon-riders of the Black Vanguard patrolled the airspace between Navy Pier and Soldier Field, their lances of void-frost freezing the remaining void-crawlers and dropping them into the deep water where they dissolved into harmless gray foam. High above the shoreline, the great dimensional tear that had threatened to swallow the Loop was shrinking rapidly, knit shut by the harmonic resonance of Seraphina's purified Sun-Mirror six hundred leagues away in the Otherworld.
On the ruined observation deck, Kaelen stood at the edge of the jagged opening, looking out over the sprawling mortal grid.
He had stripped off his blood-spattered gauntlets, his bare, scarred fingers gripping the twisted steel mullion. His eighty-foot shadow-wings were loosely folded against his back, glistening with dew and morning light. His silver eyes, usually so hard and cynical, tracked the streams of flashing emergency lights below with quiet, contemplative fascination.
"So this is where you hid," Kaelen murmured, his low baritone warm and gravelly in the dawn air. "Ten million mortals, living stacked on top of one another in towers of glass and iron, completely blind to the horrors sleeping beneath their feet."
Seraphina walked up beside him, her boots crunching softly over the blanket of diamond-bright safety glass.
She had sheathed her white sunstone daggers. Her dragon-scale armor was scorched along the flank, and smudges of soot streaked her high cheekbones, but her amber eyes burned with vibrant, triumphant life. Her twenty-foot starlight wings caught the morning rays, shimmering like liquid white gold.
She leaned her shoulder against his arm, her small, warm hand slipping into his calloused palm.
"They aren't blind, Kaelen," she said softly, gazing down at the tiny figures of first responders emerging from the subways and parking garages to tend to the wounded. "They just didn't have the tools to see. When I worked on the ambulances down there, I thought human frailty was a curse. I thought being mortal meant being helpless."
Kaelen turned to look at her, his expression softening into an expression of unyielding devotion that stole the breath from her lungs. He raised his free hand, his knuckles gently grazing the soft curve of her jaw, tilting her face up to meet his gaze.
"There is nothing frail about the world that forged you, my Queen," he murmured, his thumb brushing away a speck of soot from her lip. "I watched them fight on Michigan Avenue with their crude projectile weapons. They had no ether, no magic, no shields—yet they stood their ground to protect their kin. They have the hearts of vanguard warriors."
Seraphina smiled, her heart fluttering at the fierce respect in his voice. "And what does the High Sovereign of Mount Dread plan to do with them now?"
Kaelen’s lips curved into a slow, dangerous smirk—the look of an apex predator who had claimed a new territory and dared the universe to challenge him.
"We leave our mark," Kaelen rumbled, pulling her flush against his chest with effortless strength. His arms wrapped tightly around her waist, anchoring her to him as the autumn wind whipped her auburn curls across his scarred collarbone. "Azgorath spoke of five other rifts waking across the mortal continents. Paris, Tokyo, Cairo... the Maw’s network is vast. But they will find no easy harvest here."
He looked deeply into her amber eyes, his molten silver irises glowing with ancient, sovereign power.
"We will establish an embassy of the Night Court right here in your Chicago," Kaelen vowed, his lips brushing hers with hungry, electric heat. "The Black Vanguard will watch over the Seven Spheres, and you and I will hunt down every last splinter of the Maw until the Ninth Sphere is locked in chains forever."
Seraphina wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him down into a searing, possessive kiss that erased the blood, the ash, and five millennia of separation between their peoples.
Under the golden light of the Chicago dawn, the Sun-Queen and the Shadow-King sealed their eternal reign.
