The bronze war-horns of the Night Court roared across the high crags of Mount Dread, their deep, resonant blare waking every battlement from its brief peacetime slumber.
Within the hour, the Black Vanguard had assembled upon the Great Obsidian Runway overlooking the eastern precipice. Five thousand elite high-fae shadow-riders sat mounted upon massive, armored Night-Drakes—reptilian beasts with wings of midnight leather and breath that burned with freezing void-frost. Their black adamantine lances were raised in solemn, disciplined formation, their banners of the Eclipse snapping fiercely in the high-altitude gale.
Seraphina stood at the head of the runway, adjusting the straps of her new battle armor.
Forged by the royal smiths during the night, the suit was a masterpiece of white dragon-scale overlaid with gold-threaded etheric mesh. It clung to her curves like a second skin, offering lightweight protection without restricting the movement of her twenty-foot solar wings. At her back rested a newly crafted recurve bow of sunstone glass, its quiver filled with shafts tipped in concentrated plasma crystals.
Beside her, Kaelen stood reviewing a glowing holographic tactical map suspended in the air.
He was clad in the full, unyielding regalia of his bloodline: the Doom-Plate of the First Sovereign. Spiked pauldrons carved from dragon-horn rose from his broad shoulders, his heavy fur mantle pinned by twin silver clasps. His eighty-foot shadow-wings shifted behind him with restless, predatory agitation, their dark-matter feathers casting wavering silhouettes across the snow.
"Caelum's Reach is six hundred leagues east, perched atop the Serrated Crags," Kaelen explained, his clawed gauntlet pointing to a towering pinnacle on the map. "It was the westernmost watchtower of the Sun-Empire before the Fall. When your ancestors fell, the spire was sealed with solar blood-wards. Only someone carrying pure Sunblood can pass through the outer barrier without turning to ash."
"Which is why Azgorath needed the diversion," Seraphina realized, her amber eyes narrowing into lethal focus. "They didn't just seize the perimeter. They brought dark sorcerers to crack the blood-seal using corrupted soul-iron."
"Exactly," Kaelen agreed, his deep voice thick with cold, calculating fury. "If they breach the inner sanctuary and align the Sun-Mirror with the Seventh Leyline, they can fire a beam of inverted solar entropy straight into the heart of Mount Dread. It would shatter our mountain’s core and incinerate the Citadel in seconds."
He banished the holographic map with a dismissive flick of his wrist, turning his full, undivided attention to her.
His molten silver eyes softened as his gaze swept over her in her new white and gold armor. A slow, dark smirk curved his lips, his fingers reaching out to tuck an errant strand of auburn hair behind her pointed ear.
"You look breathtaking in the colors of war, my Queen," he murmured, his voice dropping into a rough, intimate register that made her pulse flutter despite the howling wind around them.
"Flattery won't stop me from taking the first head, Vance," she replied with a wicked, confident grin, leaning up on her toes until her lips almost brushed the rugged angle of his jaw.
Kaelen chuckled, a low, rumbling vibration in his chest that thrummed straight through the mate-bond. He caught her waist with both hands, lifting her effortlessly onto the saddle of his massive, personal mount: Gloom-Fang, an ancient elder-drake whose scales were darker than pitch and whose eyes burned with twin silver embers.
Kaelen vaulted up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist to grip the heavy leather reins, his chest pressing warmly against her back. His massive wings tucked neatly over their flanks, shielding them from the sub-zero mountain gale.
"Hold fast, little sun," Kaelen growled against the sensitive shell of her ear, his fangs gently grazing her neck before he snapped the reins. "Tonight, we ride with the storm."
Gloom-Fang bellowed a roar that rattled the stone, leaping from the edge of the precipice into the vast, twilight sky.
Behind them, five thousand Night-Drakes vaulted into the air in synchronized, terrifying majesty, their black wings blotting out the stars as the Black Vanguard marched east to war.
