The eastern horizon was burning, but not with the clean, golden light of dawn.
As Gloom-Fang breached the low-hanging thunderclouds, the Serrated Crags came into terrifying view. Rising like a bleached bone from the jagged mountain ridges was Caelum’s Reach—a monolithic ivory spire soaring two thousand paces into the sky, its fluted marble towers encircled by weeping bands of sickly viridian lightning.
Around the base of the spire swarmed the siege-host of the Ashen Maw.
Tens of thousands of rusted-iron dread-corsairs had ringed the lower terraces. Colossal siege-beasts—hulking monstrosities clad in spiked plates with massive bone rams jutting from their snouts—battered rhythmically against the ancient, flickering golden barrier enclosing the lower gates. High above on the spire's pinnacle, mounted upon a colossal brass gimbal, sat the Sun-Mirror: a circular disk of polished solar amber a hundred paces wide, already being turned toward the distant silhouette of Mount Dread.
"The barrier is failing!" Seraphina shouted over the rushing gale, leaning against Kaelen’s armored chest. Through the bond, she could feel the agonizing strain of the ancient blood-ward—her ancestors' magic crumbling under the assault of necrotic siege-cannons.
"Then we shatter their line before they breach the sanctum!" Kaelen roared into the wind.
He rose slightly in the stirrups, unsheathing Gloom-Weaver. The broadsword erupted in a blinding aura of black-lightning and void-gravity.
"Vanguard! Dive!"
Kaelen’s command reverberated through the psychic leylines. Five thousand Night-Drakes folded their leathery wings in unison, plummeting out of the storm clouds like an avalanche of midnight meteors.
The Ashen Maw army scrambled in sudden panic. War-horns rattled among the rusted iron ranks, and batteries of heavy ballistas swiveled skyward, launching volleys of barbed iron harpoons trailing necrotic green fire.
"Seraphina, clear the skies!" Kaelen growled, banking Gloom-Fang through a hail of incoming bolts.
"With pleasure!"
Seraphina unslung her sunstone recurve bow. In a fluid, breathless motion, she drew the glowing string back to her cheek. No wooden arrow rested on the rest; her Sunblood manifested three concentrated bolts of pure, thermonuclear plasma.
She released.
The three arrows screamed through the air, detonating against the lead ballista battery in a colossal shockwave of white-gold fire. The blast vaporized the siege engine, the crew, and the stone tower beneath them, showering molten iron over the panicked ranks below.
She notched and fired again and again, her golden arrows raining down like orbital strikes, dismantling the enemy's anti-air defenses in a storm of brilliant solar fury.
With the skies cleared, Kaelen brought Gloom-Fang directly over the central siege line.
"Brace yourself!" Kaelen commanded, snapping his reins.
Gloom-Fang unleashed a roaring cone of freezing void-frost that flash-froze three hundred dread-corsairs into brittle statues of black ice, shattering them into powder as the elder-drake slammed its colossal talons into the stone courtyard.
Kaelen vaulted from the saddle, his eighty-foot shadow-wings bursting open with concussive, mountain-shaking force. Gloom-Weaver descended in a brutal, sweeping vortex of dark matter that cleaved five armored warlords in half in a single breath. He was an apex predator unleashed, carving a blood-drenched path through the horde toward the lower gates.
Seraphina leaped down beside him, drawing her twin sunstone daggers.
Her twenty-foot starlight wings flared wide, incinerating a pair of lunging berserkers into ash with a single backhand sweep of solar heat. Back to back, High Sovereign and Sun-Queen met the Ashen Maw horde on the steps of her ancestral home.
"The sanctum!" Seraphina shouted, parrying a rusted halberd and burying her dagger into a corsair's throat. "Azgorath’s sorcerers are already at the pinnacle aligning the mirror!"
"Take the skies!" Kaelen roared, ripping his broadsword through a siege-beast's jugular, dark blood spraying across his dragon-steel greaves. "Fly to the summit! I will hold the gates until the vanguard secures the courtyard!"
Their eyes met through the spray of battle-blood and drifting embers. Kaelen reached out, his bloody gauntlet catching the back of her neck, pulling her into a fierce, breathless kiss that tasted of iron, ash, and desperate promises.
"Burn them down, my Queen," he growled against her lips. "I will be right behind you."
Seraphina broke away, her amber eyes blazing with lethal determination. With a powerful thrust of her golden wings, she launched skyward, racing toward the pinnacle of the spire to reclaim the weapon of her ancestors.
