The subterranean air of the purified aqueducts was now crisp and fragrant with ozone, but the stone floor near the central sluice-gate still carried the grim stains of battle.
Sentinel Captain Valen had been whisked away by the royal healers, his pulse stabilized and his mind slowly mending from the parasitic trauma of the spite-core. Across the platform, the severed carcasses of the Shadow-Stalkers were being dragged into containment carts by high-fae sentinels clad in full protective dragon-scale.
Yet the primary danger had not been completely vanquished.
Resting on a raised basalt pedestal at the center of the platform was the rusted iron vessel Valen had carried: the Urn of the Ashen Maw.
Even stripped of its liquid poison, the urn hummed with a foul, malignant vibration. Tendrils of oily black smoke leaked from its narrow neck, coiling in midair like agitated vipers. The iron surface was etched with crawling, blood-red runes of the ancient Nether-Tongue—a language spoken only by the primordials of the Deep Abyss.
Lady Vespera, High Inquisitor of the Shadow Archives, stood three paces from the pedestal, her amethyst eyes narrowed behind her cowl. She held an ivory rod tipped with glowing void-sapphire, tracing containment circles in the air to keep the fumes from spreading.
"This is no mere delivery vessel, Your Majesties," Vespera murmured as Kaelen and Seraphina approached. "The metal is forged from soul-iron, quenched in the blood of starved thralls. There is a sentient splinter trapped within the alloy—a listening eye tied directly to the High Command of the Maw."
Kaelen stepped forward, his dark dragon-steel armor still spattered with soot, Gloom-Weaver resting against his hip. His eighty-foot shadow-wings remained half-furled, casting long, menacing silhouettes across the damp masonry.
"Open the vessel's mind, Inquisitor," Kaelen commanded, his baritone cold and lethal. "Let us hear what the carrion-eaters have to say."
Vespera struck the rim of the urn with the tip of her ivory rod.
A sharp, ringing chime echoed through the vaulted cavern. The oily smoke thickened, twisting into the grotesque shape of a leering, horned visage suspended in the vapor.
A raspy, grating voice hissed from the smoke, dripping with mocking malice:
"Ah... the arrogant High Sovereign of Mount Dread and his little solar plaything. Did you enjoy the taste of our bile, Vance?"
"Your vanguard is dead, abomination," Seraphina said, stepping up to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Kaelen. Her amber eyes burned with untamed solar fire, her right hand resting casually on the hilt of her sunstone dagger. "Your stalkers are severed, your parasite is dust, and your poison has been washed away into nothing."
The smoky face coiled, turning its hollow, smoky gaze directly onto Seraphina. A low, wheezing cackle rattled from its spectral throat.
"Spoken with the fiery tongue of your mother, little Sun-Heir," the entity sneered, its vaporous tendrils snapping toward her before recoiling from her radiant aura. "You think you have won a victory today? The poison in the water was never meant to slaughter your cattle. It was a diversion."
Kaelen’s silver eyes narrowed dangerously. "A diversion for what?"
"Look to your eastern rim, Sovereign!" the spirit hissed with triumphant glee. "While you played savior in the sewers, our Dread-Corsairs breached the Eastern Spire of Caelum’s Reach. The Sun-Mirror... the ancient reflector of your Queen's ancestors... is already in our grasp!"
Seraphina’s breath hitched. Through the ancient memories dormant in her Sunblood, a sudden vision flashed through her mind: a colossal solar beacon standing on the eastern edge of the realm, capable of focusing celestial starlight into a weapon that could incinerate entire armies—or tear the Veil apart.
"The Scourge sends his regards, little Queen, "the spirit shrieked, expanding into a howling vortex of black smoke."We will burn your dawn to ashes!"
"You talk too much," Kaelen growled.
Without warning, Kaelen's gauntleted hand shot out. He gripped the iron neck of the urn, his dark-matter gravity erupting in a blinding pulse of black lightning. With a sickening crunch of warping metal, Kaelen crushed the enchanted soul-iron into a twisted knot of harmless scrap, suffocating the smoky apparition into absolute, permanent silence.
He tossed the crushed iron onto the flagstones with contempt, then turned to Seraphina, his expression carved from grim, unrelenting granite.
"The Eastern Spire," Seraphina whispered, her hand tightening around his wrist as the urgency sank in. "Kaelen, if they turn the Sun-Mirror against Mount Dread..."
"They won't get the chance," Kaelen vowed, his silver eyes flashing with sovereign wrath as his massive shadow-wings snapped wide. "Sound the horn of the Night Vanguard. We ride for Caelum’s Reach."
