The bubbling viridian sludge continued its relentless crawl toward the city's intake valves.
With every passing second, the foul, acidic stench thickened. Steam hissed off the corrupted surface of the aqueduct, eating away at the carved stone foundations of the lower tiers. If the toxic tide crested the central spillway, the civilian water supplies would be poisoned before morning bells.
Seraphina stood at the lip of the main sluice gate, looking down into the boiling river. Her chest heaved, her silk shift streaked with soot and black stalker ichor, but the golden glow beneath her skin remained steady and fierce.
"If I plunge into the stream, I can unleash an omnidirectional solar purge," she said, her amber eyes scanning the current. "The heat will burn out the necrotic rot at the molecular level."
"No," Kaelen growled instantly, stepping up beside her, his massive shadow-wings flaring with instinctive, protective alarm. "The volume of tainted ether is too vast. If you attempt to cleanse miles of subterranean canals alone, your Sunblood will drain to the marrow. You’ll suffer etheric burnout, Seraphina. I won't let you sacrifice yourself for my city."
"It's our city now, Kaelen," she countered, her voice unyielding as she turned to face him. She caught his armored vambrace, her fingers pressing into the dragon-steel. "And I don't intend to burn out. Not while I have an ancient dark-matter battery standing right next to me."
Kaelen paused, his molten silver eyes narrowing as understanding flashed across his sharply chiseled features.
"The resonance," he murmured, his baritone dropping to a rough, breathless rasp.
"The resonance," she confirmed, a fierce, confident smile touching her lips. "Your shadow-matter can create a gravitational compression field around the canal, bottling the sludge into a pressurized corridor. That way, my solar fire won't dissipate across the entire cavern. It will channel straight down the vein like a laser."
A slow, feral grin spread across Kaelen’s lips. The pride burning in his gaze was so thick it made her pulse skip a beat.
"Clever little sun," he purred, his scarred hand reaching out to cup the back of her neck, pulling her toward him until their brows almost touched. "Then let us show this realm how dawn and dusk hold the line together."
Kaelen stepped to the very edge of the sluice platform. He sheathed Gloom-Weaver and raised both hands toward the churning, viridian river.
"By the blood of the First King!" he roared into the depths.
His eighty-foot shadow-wings snapped wide, casting an absolute, suffocating darkness over the canal. Tendrils of black, gravitational force plunged into the bubbling sludge like massive iron pylons. With a deafening groan of bending physics, the churning poison was seized by invisible, crushing pressure. Kaelen compressed the miles-long spread of infected ether into a dense, narrow torrent, holding the catastrophic volume in an iron vice of pure void-gravity.
Veins of silver strained along Kaelen’s neck and forearms, his jaw locked in ferocious effort as he held back the crushing weight of the subterranean tide.
"Now, Seraphina!" he gritted out through his teeth. "Burn it!"
Seraphina didn't hesitate.
She vaulted off the platform, her twenty-foot wings of starlight snapping open as she hovered directly above the compressed canal. She crossed her forearms over her chest, closing her eyes, diving deep into the primal furnace of her Sunblood.
She remembered the terrified sentinels, the sleeping families in the spires above, the quiet sanctuary of the glass orchids, and the fierce, unyielding vow Kaelen had sworn on his knees.
"Ignite," she whispered.
She thrust both palms downward.
A blinding torrent of white-gold solar plasma cascaded from her hands, pouring directly into Kaelen’s gravitational conduit.
The reaction was instantaneous and magnificent.
Confined by Kaelen's dark-matter walls, the solar fire had nowhere to scatter. It raced down the length of the aqueduct like a living lightning bolt of pure celestial dawn. The necrotic viridian rot didn't just burn—it was utterly obliterated, screaming as the holy fire scrubbed every drop of corruption from the water.
Steam billowed in roaring white clouds, not of sulfur, but of fresh, sweet mountain rain and ozone.
The boiling sludge collapsed, replaced in an instant by roaring, crystalline rivers of pure, luminescent violet ether rushing through newly purified stone. The ancient wards along the masonry flared to life once more, chiming in harmonious, ringing celebration.
Kaelen released the gravitational barrier, his chest heaving, his wings folding as the exhaustion of the strain caught him.
Above the rushing violet waters, Seraphina drifted down, her golden wings fluttering softly as she touched down upon the stone platform. She swayed on her feet, the immense expenditure of magic making her knees buckle.
Before she could hit the ground, Kaelen caught her.
His arms wrapped securely around her waist, lifting her against his chest as he pulled her back from the water’s edge. His lips found hers in a fierce, breathless kiss that tasted of victory, clean rain, and intoxicating starlight.
"You did it," Kaelen whispered against her mouth, his forehead resting against hers as his silver eyes glowed with fierce, reverent love. "You saved them all, my Queen."
Seraphina smiled weakly, her hands clutching the collar of his armor as she rested against his heart. "We did it, Vance. We did it together."
