The stench of necrotic rot in the subterranean aqueducts was so thick it stung the back of the throat like acid.
High vaulted ceilings of ancient, water-slicked basalt stretched into the darkness, but the once-crystalline violet rivers were now churning with boiling, emerald sludge. Corrupted steam hissed against the masonry, dissolving ancient protective wards into chalky ruin.
From the shadows of the high intake valves, two dozen Shadow-Stalkers chittered with manic glee. They clung to the arches like colossal black spiders, their razor scythe-limbs twitching as the necrotic bile flowed toward the lower reservoirs feeding the sleeping residential wards.
Then, the gloom shattered.
A spear of incandescent golden light exploded through the southern drainage grate, vaporizing the iron bars into molten slag.
Seraphina vaulted through the breach, her twenty-foot wings of solar starlight beating with ferocious intensity. She hovered over the bubbling, toxic canal, her sunstone daggers igniting into blazing twin arcs of superheated plasma that illuminated every corner of the defiled cavern.
"Down here, vermin!" her voice rang out like a war horn, pure and commanding.
The stalkers shrieked, clusters of red sensory pits locking onto the radiant warmth of her Sunblood. In a frantic, chittering swarm, a dozen arachnid horrors detached from the ceiling, plunging toward her with extended bone-glass proboscises.
Before the first claw could graze her aura, a roaring vortex of abyssal gravity tore through the cavern from above.
Kaelen descended like a falling star of pure dark matter.
His eighty-foot shadow-wings crashed outward with concussive, mountain-shaking force. The shockwave snatched six of the falling stalkers straight out of midair, snapping their carapaces like brittle twigs and slamming their crushed bodies into the stone walkways.
Kaelen landed on the narrow central sluice-gate, his boots cracking the flagstones. Gloom-Weaver traced a vicious, low horizontal sweep, severing three more abominations at the waist in a spray of black, acidic blood.
"You dare defile the sacred waters of Mount Dread?" Kaelen’s sovereign roar reverberated off the cavern walls, shaking loose stalactites from the roof.
From the shadows of the primary intake valve shambled the infected husk of Captain Valen. His jaws distended unnaturally, black ichor dripping from his lips as the parasitic green crystal embedded in his chest pulsed with frantic power. Beside him reared the massive eight-legged brood-leader, its mandibles clicking a savage telepathic order to tear the intruders apart.
"Kaelen, the Captain is infected by a Leyline Spite-Core!" Seraphina shouted, dodging a barrage of toxic bone filaments from a clinging stalker and incinerating it with a backhand bolt of solar flame. "The core is linked to the reservoir! If you kill him with void-magic, the crystal will detonate and vaporize the entire conduit!"
"Then how do we sever the parasite?" Kaelen demanded, parrying a lunging strike from the brood-leader’s scythe-limbs, his dragon-steel gauntlet catching the bone blade and snapping it with contemptuous strength.
"With dawn!" Seraphina called out, her eyes blazing with regal determination. "Hold the beast! Give me an opening to his chest!"
Kaelen’s silver eyes flashed with instant understanding. With a savage growl, he launched himself entirely at the towering brood-leader. His shadow-wings flared into an impenetrable wall of dark gravity, pinning the colossal arachnid against the cavern wall and trapping its thrashing limbs beneath an avalanche of crushing pressure.
"Now, Seraphina!" Kaelen roared.
Seraphina folded her wings and dove like a falling comet.
She landed directly before the groaning husk of Captain Valen. The corrupted warrior swung his rusted halberd at her neck, but Seraphina ducked beneath the blow with fluid, paramedic precision. She stepped inside his guard, dropping her daggers, and drove both of her bare, glowing palms flat against the pulsing green spite-core embedded in his sternum.
"Burn the parasite, spare the soul," she whispered fiercely.
Her Sunblood surged in a concentrated, surgical nova of pure celestial fire.
The golden light bored through the infected crystal. The spite-core shrieked, fracturing into glowing emerald dust as the thermonuclear heat dissolved the necrotic venom without harming the mortal flesh beneath.
Valen gasped, vomiting a torrent of black bile before his eyes returned to their natural silver hue, collapsing unconscious but breathing into Seraphina’s arms.
Across the chamber, Kaelen delivered the coup de grâce to the pinned brood-leader. With a brutal two-handed thrust, Gloom-Weaver pierced through the monster’s skull, pinning it to the bedrock until its twitching limbs curled into lifeless stillness.
Silence fell over the blood-soaked aqueduct, broken only by the bubbling of the poisoned sludge.
Seraphina gently laid Valen onto the dry stone and stood, her breathing ragged, her amber eyes turning to the vast river of viridian filth still pouring toward the city below.
"The sentinels are safe," she breathed, looking toward Kaelen as he wiped his blade clean. "Now... we have to cleanse an entire river."
