The blast of silver luminescence lit the facade of the Imperial Palace like a falling star.
Aurelia landed upon the marble parapet of the Wall of Saints with the sound of cracking bone. Her descent shattered the interlocking gilded shields of the automata guard, throwing four of the silver constructs over the edge to plummet a hundred feet onto the carnage below.
Before the remaining constructs could realign their heavy halberds, she was already across the landing.
Her blades were blinding streaks of quicksilver. She did not strike at their armor plates; she severed the brass arterial cables pumping pressurized soul-ichor through their necks. Five automata seized and collapsed into heaps of smoking cogs, while Aurelia lunged straight for the dais where Emperor Valerius stood clutching the Scepter of the First Dawn.
"Abomination!" Valerius snarled, terror twisting his withered face into a feral sneer.
He thrust the black-iron staff forward with both hands. From the abyssal core mounted at its crest, a lance of concentrated, pitch-black void erupted with a deafening, reality-tearing shriek.
Aurelia did not dodge.
She raised her left dagger, channeling the full weight of her lineage into the narrow horn hilt. The abyssal beam met the edge of her blade, splitting into two curling ribbons of purple lightning that gouged deep trenches through the marble balustrades behind her.
The pressure was suffocating, threatening to grind the bones of her wrists to powder, but she pressed forward step by grueling step, her boots digging into the shattered stone.
"Your empire died when you chained the Veil, Valerius," she breathed through gritted teeth, her eyes burning with pure, unyielding silver fire.
Behind her, the central gates of the Wall of Saints exploded inward in a storm of twisted bronze and sheared iron.
Malakor emerged from the dust cloud like a god of war stepping from the heart of a forge. His chest plate was scored with deep gouges, his dark hair soaked with sweat and oil, but his amber eyes burned with an unchained, apocalyptic fury that silenced the groaning machinery of the remaining automata.
He did not waste a heartbeat.
With a roar that shook the Golden Spire to its very foundations, Malakor threw his meteoric great sword across the terrace like a javelin.
The massive blade, engulfed in blazing sovereign fire, screamed through the air and struck the shaft of the Scepter of the First Dawn directly below the abyssal core.
The black iron sheared in two with a catastrophic metaphysical report that blew the Emperor backward against the palace doors.
Deprived of its anchor, the abyssal beam collapsed. The lingering soul-ichor inside the twenty thousand automata across the grand stairs violently combusted, their clockwork hearts seizing simultaneously in a wave of screeching metal and plumes of white smoke. Across the entire grand staircase, the Seraphic Cohort collapsed into lifeless, smoking scrap.
Aurelia surged across the remaining three paces.
Before Valerius could scramble to his feet, her boot slammed down upon his frail chest, pinning the Emperor of the Solar Concord to the cracked marble. Her right dagger rested its razor-sharp tip against the trembling hollow of his windpipe, drawing a single bead of imperial crimson.
Valerius lay shivering beneath her heel, his crown knocked askew, staring up at her with eyes hollowed by absolute despair.
"Spare me..." the Emperor choked out, his manicured hands clawing at her leather greave. "The treasury... the fleets... the sovereignty of the southern sea... all of it is yours..."
A heavy, iron-shod boot struck the marble beside them.
Malakor loomed over the fallen monarch, retrieving his great sword from the shattered paving stones with a casual jerk of his wrist. He rested the flat of the smoking steel against Valerius’s collar, his amber gaze cold, pitiless, and ancient.
"You gave our people to the pyres for a hundred years, Valerius," Malakor growled, his deep voice carrying the finality of an executioner's bell across the silent terrace. "There is no coin left in this world that can purchase your breath."
Malakor reached down with his left hand, caught the golden imperial crown from Valerius’s gray head, and crushed the delicate orichalcum band in his iron fist like cheap tin, tossing the bent metal into the dust.
He looked across the Emperor's body to meet Aurelia’s gaze.
The storm of battle had cleared, leaving only the fierce, unyielding bond between them—a sovereign and his queen, standing upon the threshold of an empire they had conquered with their bare hands.
"Take his head, Aurelia," Malakor murmured, his voice softening into a dark, possessive promise that belonged to her alone. "And let us sit upon our throne."
Aurelia did not hesitate.
With a clean, merciless sweep of her blade, she severed the last breath of the Solar Concord, claiming the Golden City for the dawn of the Wolf and the Veil.
