The sky over Sol-Vaelen ripped open like a rotten seam.
From the fracture above the Golden Spire, ribbons of sickly amethyst mist spiraled down, coating the marble cornices of the imperial palaces in frost that smelled of old catacombs. Down in the Plaza of the Sun, the cobblestones buckled as subterranean conduits groaned beneath the unnatural pressure of the awakened crypts.
At the top of the grand marble stair, the Seraphic Cohort moved as one.
Twenty thousand silver-steel automata lowered their gilded halberds in a synchronized, deafening clatter of plate and clockwork. Their weeping masks caught the purple glare of the sky, reflecting no eyes, no soul, only the cold, unyielding arithmetic of their programming.
They did not march down the stairs; they descended in a relentless, rolling wave of polished metal and whirring gears, their heavy boots striking each marble tread with the force of trip-hammers.
"Spearmen, form the boar's head!" Kaelen’s voice bellowed from the rear, echoing through the colonnades as five thousand northern veterans locked their iron-bound shields into a triple wedge at the base of the stairs. "Brace for the shock!"
Malakor did not join the line.
He planted his boots at the center of the avenue, fifteen paces ahead of the vanguard's front rank. His great sword was raised across his right shoulder, its runic blade engulfed in a swirling vortex of sovereign white heat and raw kinetic pressure. He looked up at the descending tide of clockwork soldiers not with dread, but with the ravenous hunger of an apex predator watching cattle herd into a slaughter pen.
"Their cores are anchored to the Emperor’s staff," Aurelia said, stepping up to his left elbow.
Her daggers were drawn, the silver glyphs along her forearms flaring with an ethereal brilliance that cut clean through the violet mist. The bond between them hummed violently, matching the rapid, synchronized tempo of their breath. "Destroy the automata, and the feedback will shatter Valerius's grip on the rift."
"Then we break them all," Malakor rumbled, his voice dropping into that dark, subterranean register that made the stones under their feet vibrate in resonance.
He didn't wait for the automata to reach the foot of the stairs.
With a roar that silenced the wind tearing through the plaza, Malakor launched himself upward into the center of the descending silver phalanx.
His great sword carved a colossal horizontal crescent through the front ranks. The thermodynamic clash of absolute-zero vacuum and superheated sovereign fire struck the silver-steel constructs like an artillery shell. Three dozen automata shattered into twisted gears, severed limbs, and pressurized oil, their weeping masks blown fifty feet into the air.
Aurelia surged into the breach beside him.
She was a streak of quicksilver in the carnage. Where Malakor brought crushing, apocalyptic brute force, Aurelia moved with terrifying, surgical fluidity. She slipped beneath the sweep of their eight-foot halberds, her curved blades plunging into the vulnerable gear-housings at their necks and elbows.
With every construct she struck, the silver magic of the Veil surged down her daggers, freezing the clockwork mechanisms to brittle glass before the kinetic force of her kicks snapped them in halves.
The Seraphic Cohort pressed forward with mechanical indifference, stepping over the heaps of their fallen comrades to surround the pair in an iron vise. A ring of sixty halberds lunged inward from all angles, aimed to pin them to the marble stairs.
Malakor caught Aurelia by the waist with his left arm, lifting her cleanly above the thrusting spear points as he spun in a full circle, his great sword sweeping low along the stone.
The blade sheared through thirty pairs of greaves in a single, devastating arc. The front rank collapsed into a tangled heap of thrashing metal, while Aurelia landed lightly upon the flat of a falling halberd, using the momentum to spring twenty paces up the staircase toward the high terrace where Emperor Valerius stood.
"Stop her!" Valerius shrieked from the battlements, pointing his black-iron scepter toward the ascending wraith. "Purge the witch! Close the gates!"
A cohort of two hundred heavy automata turned to bar her path, raising a wall of gilded tower shields across the upper landing.
Behind her, Malakor climbed through the pulverized remnants of the silver army like an erupting volcano, his boots leaving charred, steaming footprints in the cracked marble.
"Aurelia!" his roar shook the balustrades, carrying an unyielding command laced with fierce, desperate devotion. "Take the terrace!"
Aurelia did not look back. She knew he was there, an unbreachable wall of sovereign wrath holding twenty thousand soldiers at her back.
She vaulted into the air, crossing her daggers above her head as the silver runes across her chest erupted into a blinding supernova of Veil-light, driving straight for the Emperor’s throat.
