The head of Emperor Valerius rolled three paces across the white marble, coming to rest against the gilded pedestal of an ancient sun-god whose face was blackened with soot.
Silence descended upon the terrace of the Wall of Saints. It was not the gentle quiet of evening, but the stunned, breathless hush of an empire realizing its master was carrion.
Below the battlements, the grand staircase lay blanketed in smoke and the inert, ruined carapaces of twenty thousand silver automata. In the Plaza of the Sun, the twelve thousand warriors of the Northern Vanguard stood in motionless ranks, staring up at the terrace where the severed standard of the Solar Concord flapped weakly in the updrafts.
Aurelia wiped the edge of her curved blade along the hem of her tunic, sheathing the daggers at her hips with a dry, metallic snick.
Her chest rose and fell in shallow, measured breaths. The silver glyphs etched across her skin were still hot, pulsing like freshly forged iron beneath her collar, but the suffocating pressure of the open rift above the city was already receding. With the Emperor’s staff shattered, the violet fracture in the sky was knitting shut, suffocated by the natural weight of the mortal realm.
A heavy hand rested against the curve of her waist.
Malakor stepped close, turning her until her back was pressed against the broad, warm plates of his chest. His breathing was heavy, rough with the aftermath of the slaughter, his chin resting against the crown of her head. He didn't speak. He simply held her against him, his fingers splaying across her ribs, feeling the fierce, steady thrum of her heartbeat through the leather.
The blood-tether between them was no longer a taut wire strained to snapping; it was an open channel of shared fire, intoxicating and absolute.
"Look at them," Malakor murmured, his deep rumble vibrating against her spine.
He nodded toward the avenue below.
General Kaelen rode his battle-scarred mount through the shattered bronze valves of the lower gate, leading thirty captains up the grand marble staircase. The veteran spearmen hammered the flats of their notched blades against their iron shields, a rising cadence of rhythmic thunder that shook the marble balustrades:
"Hail the Wolf! Hail the Sovereign Queen!"
The roar rolled across the seven hills of Sol-Vaelen, taken up by the surviving citizens who peeked through the shuttered windows of the lower palaces. They had expected fire and mass slaughter; instead, they looked upon two apex predators standing over the corpse of their tyrant, unbowed and victorious.
Aurelia turned in Malakor’s embrace, resting her palms flat against his scarred breastplate. Her fingers curled into the edges of the dented steel, her dark eyes locking onto the smoldering amber of his gaze.
"We have taken their city, Malakor," she said softly, her lips parting as his sovereign heat washed over her cheeks. "Now, we hold it against the world."
A slow, possessive smile touched the hard line of Malakor’s mouth.
He reached up, his rough, calloused thumb catching the underside of her jaw, lifting her face until her breath hitched on the intoxicating proximity of his lips. The scent of him—smoke, blood, cold iron, and the raw musk of victory—was all that existed in the world.
"Let the world come," Malakor growled against her mouth. "They will find an anvil waiting for their hammers."
He caught her behind the knees and hoisted her into his arms with effortless, unyielding strength, turning toward the massive cedar double doors that led into the Imperial Throne Room.
He kicked the doors wide, stepping across the shattered threshold into the cavernous hall of white porphyry and gilded arches. At the far end of the hall, upon a raised dais of nine black marble steps, sat the High Throne of the Solar Dynasty—an ancient seat carved from a single block of orichalcum and draped in the pelts of extinct mountain lions.
Malakor carried her up the nine steps, setting her gently upon the golden seat.
He didn't take the chair for himself. He knelt on one knee before her, his great sword planted into the marble dais between them, his amber eyes burning with an unshakeable, terrifying devotion that belonged to her alone.
He took her wounded, silver-scarred hand in his, pressing his lips to her palm in a deep, burning vow that sealed their shared dominion over the ashes of the empire.
"My Queen," Malakor whispered against her skin.
Aurelia looked down at the fierce warlord kneeling at her feet, her hand curling around his cheek, feeling the rough stubble and the heat of his bloodline.
"My King," she answered.
Outside, the bells of the Golden City began to toll for the dawn of the New Age.
