PART 16 - "Laced in Lace & Lies"
Scene: The Bridal Boutique Bombshell
The boutique smelled like lavender and satin dreams.
Velvet curtains, champagne flutes, mirrors trimmed in gold - the whole place looked like heaven carved out for a queen. And I was the queen. Standing tall in a white corset gown with sheer lace sleeves and a mermaid train that made the bridal assistant tear up.
My girls gasped when I walked out.
Even the receptionist whispered, "That man's gonna cry when he sees you."
I smiled. I twirled. I felt ready.
Until the receptionist returned… holding a plain envelope. No name. No note. Just one line scribbled on the front:
"For the bride-to-be… before she says 'I do.'"
Scene: What Was Inside
The air thickened.
I opened it slowly, fingers trembling.
Inside?
Photos.
Me. And Kingston.
That hallway at the engagement party.
His hand on the wall.
My lips parted.
His face inches from mine.
One photo even caught my eyes closed.
My body leaning - not quite touching, but close. Too close.
Worse?
The timestamp.
The night before Paris.
The night before Devon proposed.
Scene: Devon Finds Out
I didn't tell him.
I couldn't.
But secrets in love are like wine on white - they stain everything.
Devon found the envelope in my purse later that week.
I came out of the shower in just a towel, still humming - and he was sitting on the edge of the bed, holding the photos like they burned.
"I asked you one thing," he said quietly.
"Don't lie to me."
I froze.
"I didn't kiss him," I said.
"But you thought about it."
Silence.
He stood up, ran a hand down his beard, and whispered, "I flew you to Paris to make you mine… and you were already in someone else's fantasy."
Scene: The Fallout
We didn't sleep in the same bed that night.
Or the next.
Work was tense.
Everyone felt it.
Whispers followed me down the halls.
The Starbucks girls were thriving off the drama, giggling when I passed by like they had just heard a juicy voicemail.
And Kingston?
He had the audacity to text me.
"I didn't send the photos. But I won't apologize for how I feel."
I blocked him.
Then unblocked him.
Then blocked him again.
Scene: The Rooftop Confrontation
Two days later, I found Devon on the rooftop at sunset - staring at the skyline like it held answers.
"I love you," I said, stepping beside him. "But I'm not perfect. I made a mistake. Not with my body, but maybe with my silence."
He didn't speak.
So I touched his hand.
"I didn't touch him, Devon. But I thought about what it would've felt like… because you were scaring me."
He turned, pain laced in every line of his face.
"Why?"
"Because when something's too good, it feels like it'll leave. And I wanted to be the one in control for once."
Scene: The Choice
He cupped my chin.
"No one controls love, baby. We just decide if it's worth the fight."
And then he kissed me.
Not softly. Not sweetly.
But completely. Like I was his beginning, his middle, and his never-ending.
