Title: Bound by Blood, Broken by Pride
*Chapter 5: Shadows of the Night*
The house was cloaked in a hushed stillness, the kind that only deep night could bring. The soft ticking of the wall clock was the only sound accompanying me as I sat in my room, lost in thought. The events of the evening replayed in my mind - Charles's unexpected return, his drunken state, and the tension that lingered in the air.
Suddenly, the silence was broken by the sharp ring of my phone. I glanced at the screen: it was Ekene.
"Hello, Chioma," his voice came through, tinged with concern. "How's Mama? I've been trying to reach her, but her phone isn't connecting."
I took a deep breath, recalling the earlier conversation. "She called earlier to inform me that she and Sir Frederick won't be returning tonight. They had some matters to attend to and asked me to prepare dinner accordingly."
There was a pause on the line. "I see," Ekene replied. "Thanks for letting me know."
Evening had crept in gently, draping the city in a soft amber glow. The quiet hum of the neighborhood was only interrupted by the sound of Ekene's car pulling into the family compound. He stepped out smartly, adjusting his wristwatch, and moved over to the passenger side to help Nancy out.
She looked radiant, her simple yet elegant gown flowing gracefully as she smiled up at him.
"Welcome to my family home," Ekene said with pride in his voice.
The front door was slightly ajar, and as they stepped into the living room, the soft murmurs of conversation met them. Richard and Charles were seated on the couch, still deep in discussion, a few empty drink bottles nearby.
"Ah! My brother!" Charles exclaimed as soon as he spotted them. "Come in, come in."
Ekene grinned. "Meet my fiancée, Nancy."
Richard stood up quickly, his usual charm slipping into place. "Ah, Nancy, you're very welcome
I'm Richard."
"Nice to meet you," she said warmly, offering a polite handshake.
They all exchanged pleasantries, laughter echoing for a moment through the house. After a while, Charles stood up and stretched.
"Richard, let's go out again. This house is too quiet," he said with a mischievous smile.
"Where to this time?" Richard asked, already knowing he'd agree.
"Anywhere loud," Charles chuckled.
They said goodbye to Ekene and Nancy, then stepped out into the night.
-
Moments later, the sound of the door creaking open signaled Ekene's arrival. I rose to open the door, and there he stood, a warm smile on his face, with Nancy by his side.
"Good evening, Chioma," he greeted.
"Good evening, sir. Welcome back."
"This is Nancy," he introduced, turning to his fiancée. "Nancy, this is Chioma, our trusted housekeeper."
I extended my hand, and Nancy shook it warmly. "It's a pleasure to meet you again," she said.
"Likewise, ma'am," I replied, noting her graceful demeanor.
Ekene turned to me. "Chioma, could you please bring something for Nancy to eat? She must be hungry after the journey."
"Of course, sir," I nodded and made my way to the kitchen.
As I prepared a light meal, I couldn't help but reflect on the dynamics unfolding within the household. The return of Charles and Richard, Ekene's introduction of Nancy, and the absence of the parents all seemed to intertwine, setting the stage for events yet to unfold.
Returning to the living room with a tray in hand, I found Ekene and Nancy seated comfortably, engaged in quiet conversation. I placed the tray on the table.
"Here you go, ma'am. I hope you enjoy it."
"Thank you, Chioma," Nancy smiled appreciatively.
I nodded and retreated, leaving them to their meal and conversation. The night was far from over, and I sensed that the events of this evening would ripple into the days to come.
It was a little past 11 p.m. when I heard the knock on the door.
*Knock-knock-knock.*
Rubbing my eyes sleepily, I came down the stairs to answer. When I opened it, a gust of cool night air hit me, along with the sight of Richard supporting a clearly intoxicated Charles.
"Chioma," Richard said, slightly breathless, "please help me. He had way too much to drink tonight."
Charles, half-conscious, mumbled something incoherent and leaned heavily against him.
I held the door open wider. "Come in."
They stepped in. I locked the door behind them as Richard gently maneuvered Charles toward the staircase.
"Please, help him to his room," Richard said, glancing toward the stairs. "His parents aren't back yet. Ekene is already in his room with Nancy. He shouldn't be left like this."
I nodded. "No problem. I'll take care of him."
Together, we got him up the stairs, Charles mumbling and laughing in between heavy breaths. When we reached his room, Richard helped lower him onto the bed.
"I owe you," he said, giving me a tired smile. "I'll leave you to it. Just make sure he's okay."
He left, closing the door gently behind him.
Inside the room, I sighed and looked at Charles. His head rolled to the side as he muttered, "Chioma... Chiomaaa... you look... you're pretty, have I told you...?"
I ignored the drunken words and focused on getting him more comfortable. I leaned over him and slowly unbuttoned his shirt. His skin was warm, flushed from the alcohol. I folded the shirt and placed it on the nearby chair. Then, with some effort, I loosened his trousers and gently pulled them off so he could relax properly.
"There," I whispered. "You'll feel better in the morning."
He shifted a bit, eyes barely open, murmuring something again - this time softer, less slurred.
I sat by the bed, watching his chest rise and fall steadily. The room was dim, the only light spilling in from the corridor. For a moment, everything was quiet - almost too quiet.
And that was where the night paused.
