Title: Bound by Blood, Broken by Pride
Chapter 4: Shadows of the Morning*
The morning sun filtered through the blinds as Charles adjusted his tie in front of the mirror. He looked sharp in his navy blue suit, but the weariness in his eyes couldn't be hidden. Another long day at the office awaited him. He was about to step out when his phone rang. It was his mother.
"Charles, can we talk before you leave?" her voice was firm but calm.
He sighed. "Alright, Mum. I'm coming."
He walked into the living room, where his mother, Sir Frederick's wife, sat with a solemn expression. Ekene, his brother, was already there, seated casually with his arms folded.
"Charles," his mother began, "I've been calling you, but your line was off."
Charles dropped his briefcase on the chair. "The phone was charging."
"Don't lie, Charles," Ekene teased, smirking. "You were probably out again, chasing one of those slay queens."
Charles rolled his eyes and sat down.
His mother leaned forward. "We need to talk about your lifestyle. You're not a child anymore, Charles. The things you do… they're beginning to affect our family's name. People talk. And we listen."
"Mum, this is my life," Charles replied coolly. "And I will live it the way I want."
"That's not how it works!" she snapped. "You're carrying a name, our name, and it means something. You need to think about your future."
Charles shrugged. "I'm not hurting anyone."
Ekene laughed and reached over to tap Charles lightly on the head. "Oga, abeg behave. One day you'll wake up and see that the world has moved on."
Despite the tension, they all laughed. The moment passed. Charles picked up his briefcase.
"Anyway," he said, heading to the door, "I'll be late if I stay longer."
"Drive safe," his mother said.
They each got into their separate cars and drove off, the day unfolding.
Charles's office was a cool space of silence and paperwork. He was flipping through a file when the intercom buzzed.
"Yes?" he answered.
"Sir, someone is here to see you," his secretary said.
"Let them in."
A soft knock came at the door.
"Come in."
The door opened - and Charles's eyes widened in surprise.
"Richard!" he exclaimed, standing up.
"Chaaaaarles!" Richard grinned. The two friends embraced like long-lost brothers.
"Guy! You didn't tell me you were in town," Charles said.
"I just landed a few days ago from Port Harcourt," Richard replied. "It was that viral video of you and that lady that told me you were back in Nigeria. I had to call your brother to find you."
"Wow. Come, let's go out and catch up!"
They went to a classy eatery known as *Boat Shawarma*, a luxurious spot where the elite dined. The place buzzed with quiet laughter, jazz music, and the rich scent of grilled meat and expensive wine.
Charles and Richard were halfway through their meal when a woman walked in. Tall, elegant, confident.
Charles froze, his eyes glued to her.
"Richard," he said under his breath, "don't look at that lady."
Richard was confused. "Which one?"
"The one in red. Go and talk to her for me. Please."
Richard smirked, stood, and walked over to her. She was speaking with one of the staff. Her name was Chisom Loretta - and she wasn't just a customer. She owned the place.
Instead of getting her contact for Charles, Richard ended up charming her himself. They talked, exchanged numbers, and laughed like old friends.
When he returned to the table, Charles was already restless.
"So?" he asked.
"She said she's engaged," Richard lied with a straight face.
Charles scoffed. "Engaged to who? That man must be a clown. Don't worry, I'll get her. Even if it costs me everything."
They laughed, paid for their food, and left.
Meanwhile, Ekene had gone to Nancy's house. He came with bags of gifts - foodstuffs, drinks, pastries. Nancy's mother was delighted.
"You shouldn't have bought so much!" she exclaimed, smiling as she accepted them.
"I wanted to show appreciation," Ekene said. "Nancy means a lot to me. I came today not just to see her, but to let you know… I want to marry her."
Nancy blushed beside him.
Her mother looked at him, warmth in her eyes. "I have seen the way you treat her. If this is truly your heart's decision, you have my blessing."
"Thank you, ma. My father has already met Nancy. He likes her. But today, I came properly - to ask you myself."
They all hugged, the room filled with joy.
Back at the house, I, was at home when my phone rang. It was Madam,.
"Chioma," she said. "Your oga and I won't be coming home today. We're spending the night out. Please prepare dinner accordingly. And if you see Charles or Ekene, tell them I've been calling. Their phones aren't reachable."
"Yes, ma," I said, noting everything.
Soon after, there was a knock at the door. I opened it and saw Richard.
"Hi, Chioma," he greeted with a charming smile. "Is Charles around?"
"He stepped out."
"He said I should wait for him."
"Alright, come in."
He entered and made himself comfortable. I brought him a drink. As I turned to leave, he called me back.
"What's your name again?" he asked.
"Chioma Annabel."
We talked. I told him a bit about myself - how I started working in the house. The conversation flowed. I didn't even realize how much time had passed. Our talk… it became a memory that I wouldn't forget.
Charles returned from his outing. I had dozed off on the couch when I heard the long, persistent knock.
It continued for minutes.
When I finally opened the door, Charles staggered in.
"You took forever," he slurred. "What were you two doing?"
I stood silent.
"Richard," he said, "what are you doing in our house? With our housemaid?"
Richard raised his hands. "Nothing. I was waiting for you."
Charles looked at me, eyes sharp despite his drunkenness. "What took you so long to open the door? What were you two doing?"
"Nothing!" I said quickly. "I was dressing up. I wasn't doing anything."
He scoffed. "Dressing up… hmm."
Richard tried to laugh it off. "Charles, you're drunk."
Charles sighed. "Okay. Fine. Chioma, go."
I made the sign of the cross quietly, grateful he didn't slap me. I walked away.
Charles slumped on the couch. Richard sat beside him, the room filled with unspoken tension.
And just then, the sound of the gate creaked open again.
Ekene had returned - with Nancy.
