Title: Bound by Blood, Broken by Pride
*Chapter Two: Shadows Beneath Gold*
It was late afternoon, but my room felt like night. I, *Chioma Annabelle*, curled up in the corner, my back against the wardrobe, eyes puffy and chest tight. My cheeks still stung from *Charles'* slap. The echo of his voice - cold and cruel - replayed in my head over and over.
*"How dare you touch me? You're filthy!"*
I buried my face in my knees and let the tears fall. That was when I heard the soft knock.
*Tap… tap…*
The door creaked open, and the gentle perfume of rose oil filled the room. I looked up slowly. It was *Ma Rita*.
"Chioma..." Her voice was warm, almost breaking. She walked in quietly, wearing a flowing ankara gown and a concerned expression.
I stood up quickly, wiping my eyes with the edge of my wrapper. "Ma… good evening, Ma…"
She moved toward me and took my hands. "Stop that. Please, Chioma. I didn't come here as your madam. I came as a mother."
I looked down, ashamed.
"Sit," she said, guiding me to the edge of the bed. "What Charles did earlier was… unacceptable."
I nodded, still avoiding her eyes.
She sighed. "I know I brought you here from the village to help us, not to be humiliated. You're part of this house now, Chioma. We didn't raise our boys to behave like that."
Her voice softened, "Charles has changed… Germany hardened him in a way I don't like. But I promise you, his father and I will talk to him. He needs to learn respect."
I nodded again, tears slipping down quietly.
She brushed my hair gently. "You're a good girl. Don't let today make you feel small. You are not beneath anyone."
"Thank you, Ma…" I whispered.
After a long moment of silence, she patted my shoulder and stood. "Clean your face. Come back to yourself. You're strong."
Then she left, and the door closed gently behind her.

Meanwhile, in the lavishly furnished *sitting room*, the heavy drapes were pulled back to let in the dying light of the day. The room buzzed softly with the whir of the air conditioner.
*Sir Frederick* sat on the armchair, his cane beside him. Across from him, his two sons - *Ekene*, known as *Master*, dressed in a neat polo and jeans, and *Charles*, the *Young Master*, in a white silk shirt and dark slacks - were seated, legs crossed, glasses of juice before them.
"So," Frederick said, stroking his beard. "Now that you're both back, it's time to face reality."
Charles looked up, his face calm. "We're listening, Dad."
Frederick leaned forward. "I have two companies. One produces *organic skincare products* - it's large and international. The other is a growing *packaging and logistics firm*."
He turned to Ekene. "Ekene, as the elder, you'll handle the skincare company."
Ekene nodded. "Of course, sir."
"Charles," he continued, facing him, "you'll handle the logistics firm. It's smaller but full of potential."
Charles sat back. "Fine. I studied *Business Administration and International Relations*, I'm capable."
Frederick nodded proudly. "And Ekene studied *Industrial Chemistry and Strategic Management*, which fits his role perfectly."
Suddenly, *Ekene's phone rang.* He glanced at it and smiled.
"Nancy," he said.
He answered. "Babe… oh, you're at the gate? Give me a second." He ended the call and dialed the gateman. "Chinedu, open the gate. She's here."
He turned to his father. "Nancy's here, sir."
Moments later, a knock came at the door. Ekene stood, opened it, and pulled Nancy into a warm hug. She was dressed simply, her beauty understated, eyes bright with love. He pecked her on the cheek and led her in.
"Daddy, Charles, meet Nancy - my girlfriend."
Nancy bowed slightly. "Good evening, sir. Good evening, Charles."
Charles nodded briefly. "Welcome."
Sir Frederick smiled. "You're welcome, my dear. Your name?"
"Nancy, sir. Nancy Uzo."
Frederick raised a brow. "Your parents?"
"My father is late, sir. My mother is Patience Ozoko."
"Ah," Frederick nodded thoughtfully. "sorry about your father."
"Thank you, sir."
"Well, My wife is not around now. But you'll meet her soon," he said, standing. "You're welcome."
Charles sipped his drink, watching her quietly. "Nice to meet you."
Nancy smiled politely.
Ekene clapped his hands. "Chioma!" he called.
I stepped out quickly, head lowered. "Yes, Master?"
"Please bring something nice for my fiancée."
"Yes, sir," I said, stealing a glance at Nancy, who smiled kindly at me.

Later that evening, as I worked in the *kitchen*, I heard footsteps. I turned - and there stood *Charles*.
I froze.
He didn't greet me. He leaned against the fridge, arms folded, just staring.
I swallowed hard. "Good evening, Young Master. Do you… need anything?"
He remained silent.
Then he asked, "What's your name?"
"Chioma Annabelle," I answered, my voice low.
He smirked. "Your name sounds as filthy as your clothes."
I looked down.
"Who's your boyfriend?"
"I don't have - "
Don't lie to me!" he snapped. "All you village girls pretend. But you're all cheap."
I felt tears pushing again, but I held them.
He laughed coldly, turned, and walked out.

The next morning, Sir Frederick took both sons to the *logistics company*. The workers gathered quickly, greeting them with excitement.
One young female staff stepped forward and held Charles' hand gently.
"Welcome, sir. We're glad to meet you."
Charles yanked his hand back like she was poison. "Don't touch me again," he snapped. "You talk to me. You don't touch me."
"Charles!" Frederick scolded. "She was welcoming you!"
"She can welcome me with her words. I'm not a street boy. You should train your workers better."
Frederick turned to the staff. "Please, forgive him. It won't happen again. Let's move on."
He gestured for them to follow him to the next department.

Back at home, Nancy was sitting outside on a plastic chair in her mother's compound, a small bungalow on the edge of town.
Her mother, *Patience Ozoko*, joined her with a warm smile and a bowl of mangoes.
"So, how is your fine fiancé?" she asked, biting into one.
"Mama, he's perfect," Nancy blushed. "Caring, respectful. His father loves me already."
Patience smiled. "If you marry that boy, our problems are over. Your uncle won't insult us again."
Nancy nodded, hope shining in her eyes.
"Ekene is my future," she whispered.
And in the city, Charles drove back home, his mind dark with thoughts no one yet knew.
*Let me know when you're ready for *Chapter Three*.
