*Title: Bound by Blood, Broken by Pride*
*Chapter One: Homecoming and Humiliation*
The humid air of Lagos clung to the glass as the sleek black SUV cruised through the traffic-laced road leading to the airport. In the front seat sat Clement, the family's longtime driver, dressed in a clean white kaftan and cap. The moment he caught sight of the two young men exiting the arrivals terminal, he stepped out with practiced grace and opened the back door.
"Welcome home, sirs," he greeted, bowing slightly.
Charles Aadjusted his designer shades, gave a nod without a word, and stepped into the car with the arrogance of a prince returning to his palace. His elder brother, Ekene alexandra, smiled warmly at Clement and gave him a friendly pat on the shoulder.
"Thank you, Uncle Clem. It's good to be back," Ekene said.
"master, Nigeria has missed you," Clement chuckled, closing the door behind him.
As the SUV sped toward their family mansion in Lekki, both brothers stared out of the window - Charles with detachment, Ekene with nostalgia.
At the mansion, anticipation buzzed through the walls. Rita Nzelu, their mother, was already waiting, practically bouncing with excitement. Frederick Leonard stood tall beside her, arms folded, his eyes bright with pride.
"They're here!" ma Rita exclaimed, spotting the car as it turned into the compound.
The vehicle came to a slow halt. The engine cut off.
The back doors opened.
First out was Charles, dressed in a crisp linen shirt, dark slacks, and loafers. His posture was straight, his face expressionless. Then came Ekene, smiling, arms open. Their mother rushed toward them.
"My sons!" ma Rita cried, wrapping both of them in her arms. "My babies!"
"Mum," Charles said flatly, freeing himself from the embrace. "You're squeezing my shirt."
Ekene laughed, holding her tightly. "We missed you, Mummy."
sir Frederick joined them. "Welcome home, boys," he said, clasping their shoulders. "You've made us proud."
At that moment, I - Chioma Annabelle - stepped out from the side entrance, wiping my wet hands on my apron. I had been waiting for this moment. I'd heard so much about them, especially Charles - the one whose picture I secretly stared at on the kitchen wall. Seeing him in person made my heart skip.
In a burst of joy, I ran forward, unable to stop myself.
Young master Charles! Welcome home, sir!" I said, reaching out and hugging him before I could think twice.
*SLAP!*
The slap hit me so hard it felt like the earth tilted.
"Are you mad?!" Charles snapped, his voice sharp, loud. "Who gave you the right to touch me? Do I look like someone you hug? Look at you - filthy."
My palm shot to my face. I froze. Silence fell like a hammer on the compound.
"Charles!" ma rita gasped, rushing toward me.
sir Frederick's voice thundered. "That's enough! What the hell was that?!"
"I'm putting her in her place," Charles said coldly, wiping his shirt with a handkerchief. "She's a maid. She should act like one."
Ekene took a step forward, stunned. "Bro… that was too much."
I couldn't speak. My eyes burned. I turned and ran inside.
**
Later that evening, the dining room glowed under warm lights. The long mahogany table was filled with steaming bowls of vegetable soup, jollof rice, grilled chicken, and fresh juice. The family sat down - sir Frederick at the head, ma Rita to his right, Charles on one end, Ekene across from him.
They began eating and talking about Germany, university life, and travel.
"It was cold. Always cold," Ekene said, smiling. "But the people? Kind and orderly."
Charles nodded. "Better than here. At least there, respect has structure."
Sir Frederick raised a brow. "And what does that mean?"
Before Charles could answer, I entered quietly, holding a glass jug of water. I moved carefully, my cheeks still red from the slap earlier. My hands shook slightly as I poured water into each glass.
When I got to Charles, I tried to steady my grip. But the jug tilted wrong, and cold water spilled across his lap.
*SLAP!*
Another one.
The glass hit the table. I staggered back.
"You again?!" he roared. "Are you this stupid?!"
ma Rita shot to her feet. "Charles! No!"
sir Frederick banged his palm on the table. "What is wrong with you?! This is your home, not a war zone!"
"She's embarrassing!" Charles snapped. "One day she'll do this in front of a governor. What will you say then? Let me correct her now."
I held my face, tears silently falling. ma Rita rushed over and gently placed her hand on my back.
"Chioma," she said softly. "Go inside. Rest. We'll handle this."
"I'm sorry, Ma," I whispered and left the room.
**
After I was gone, silence returned to the table.
Ekene dropped his fork. "Charles, seriously… what happened to you?"
Charles leaned back. "I learned not to tolerate nonsense."
"You learned cruelty," sir Frederick said sternly. "That's not how we raised you."
Charles scoffed. "You didn't raise me in Germany, Dad. That country did."
sir Frederick stared at him long and hard. "Maybe it's time we remind you what it means to come from this home."
Charles said nothing.
But in his eyes, something flickered.
Guilt? Or pride?
No one knew.
Only time would tell.
Let me know when you're ready for *Chapter Two*.
