Detective Simone Brooks had barely slept.
The photograph of baby Amara lay on her desk, sealed inside an evidence bag. Every time Simone looked at it, the same questions returned.
Who had taken the picture?
Where was Amara?
And what did the message mean when it said the baby was never supposed to be Danielle's?
At 7:15 that morning, Detective Aaron Mitchell walked into the office carrying a fresh report.
"We found something on Terrence," he said.
Simone looked up immediately.
"What is it?"
"Three weeks before Amara was born, Terrence made several cash withdrawals from different ATMs. The amounts weren't huge, but they were made in different parts of Bellwood. We also found messages between him and an unregistered phone number."
"Can we connect the number to anyone?"
"Not yet. But one message stands out."
Aaron handed her a printed copy.
Once the baby arrives, everything changes. Make sure you keep your promise.
Simone read it twice.
"Have we questioned him?"
"He's at Danielle's apartment. Officers are on their way."
Simone grabbed her coat.
"Let's go."
Across Bellwood, Terrence Carter sat alone in the living room of his apartment. Danielle's six-year-old son, Micah, was staying with Danielle's sister while the police searched for Amara.
Terrence stared at his phone.
He had received another message that morning.
THE POLICE ARE GETTING CLOSER. DON'T SAY A WORD.
He typed a response, then deleted it.
His hands were shaking.
A knock sounded at the door.
When he opened it, Detective Brooks stood in the hallway with Detective Mitchell beside her.
"Terrence Carter?" Simone asked.
"Yes."
"We need to talk."
He stepped aside, trying to appear calm.
Inside, Simone placed the printed messages on the coffee table.
"Can you explain these?"
Terrence glanced down at the papers.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Someone sent you messages about a baby arriving and keeping a promise. Your bank records show unusual cash withdrawals. And your newborn daughter has been kidnapped."
Terrence's jaw tightened.
"I didn't take my daughter."
"I didn't say you did," Simone replied. "But somebody believes you know more than you're telling us."
For a long moment, Terrence said nothing.
Then he rubbed his face.
"There's something Danielle doesn't know."
Simone waited.
"Before Amara was born, a woman contacted me. She said she could help my family. She knew things about Danielle and her pregnancy that I didn't understand."
"What woman?"
"I never met her in person at first. She called me from different numbers."
"What did she want?"
Terrence swallowed hard.
"She wanted me to sign some papers."
"What papers?"
"I don't know exactly. She said they were private medical documents and that everything would be explained after the baby was born."
Simone leaned forward.
"And you agreed?"
Terrence looked away.
"I was scared. She told me if I didn't cooperate, something bad would happen to Danielle and the kids."
"Did you take money from her?"
"No."
Simone watched him carefully.
"Terrence, lying to us won't bring your daughter home. If you know who took Amara, now is the time to tell us."
Terrence's eyes filled with tears.
"I never wanted this to happen."
"Then tell me everything."
He finally revealed the name the woman had used during their calls.
Vanessa Cole.
Simone exchanged a look with Aaron.
But before she could ask another question, Terrence's phone buzzed on the table.
A new message appeared.
YOU HAVE ALREADY SAID TOO MUCH.
Terrence went completely still.
Simone photographed the message and asked him to preserve the phone for the investigation.
"She's watching me," he whispered.
"Whoever sent that message may be watching you," Simone said. "But we're going to find out who it is."
Back at the station, the detectives worked to verify Terrence's account and identify the phone numbers. They did not yet know whether Vanessa had acted alone or whether someone else had used her name.
Then the hospital administrator called.
The missing-baby investigation had uncovered another troubling detail.
A second patient file had been accessed using the same former employee login.
The patient was Danielle Carter's mother.
Simone froze.
"Why would Vanessa access Danielle's mother's medical records?"
The administrator hesitated.
"There's something else. The records show that Danielle's mother gave birth to a baby girl many years ago. That child was listed as deceased shortly after birth."
Simone stared at the wall.
"Was there documentation confirming the death?"
"We're reviewing the original records. Some of the paperwork is missing."
The room fell silent.
Simone immediately requested the original files and contacted the appropriate authorities to verify the hospital's records.
Could the missing paperwork be connected to Amara's kidnapping?
Could somebody have hidden a family secret for decades?
And why had Vanessa been looking into the records now?
Before Simone could leave the station, Aaron rushed in with another update.
"We identified the black sedan."
"Who owns it?"
Aaron placed a photograph on the desk.
The registered owner was not Vanessa Cole.
It was Danielle's mother.
Simone slowly looked up.
For the first time, the investigation pointed toward someone Danielle trusted long before Terrence ever entered her life.
And somewhere in Bellwood, a woman was holding a secret that could change everything.
To be continued…
