The raccoon gang advanced, their eyes glowing in the flashlight beam. The leader, a particularly chunky raccoon with a ketchup stain on its bandana, hissed and swung a baguette like a sword.
Milo raised his magnifying glass defensively. "Stay back, furballs!"
Mrs. Pennyworth, ever resourceful, grabbed a loaf of stale French bread from the nearest shelf. "You want baguette warfare? You got it!" she yelled, swinging it like a baseball bat.
The bakery owner and detective fought side by side, whacking raccoons left and right in a bizarre, carb-filled battle. One raccoon attempted a flying leap at Milo, but he sidestepped, and it landed face-first into a stack of moldy rye.
"Not so tough now, are ya?" Milo taunted, before immediately tripping over a box of crackers.
The raccoon leader squeaked something in raccoon language, and suddenly, the gang retreated… only to reappear moments later, wheeling in a giant rolling trash can like it was a battering ram.
Mrs. Pennyworth gasped. "They're organized!"
"They've been trained," Milo said grimly.
The raccoons charged. Milo grabbed a jar of pickles from the table and flung it at the leader. It burst open, spilling brine all over the floor. The raccoons froze, sniffing the air.
"Distract them!" Milo yelled.
"How?!" Mrs. Pennyworth asked.
"Throw snacks!"
They both began hurling leftover sandwich ingredients in every direction - salami, lettuce, cheese slices. The raccoons dove for the feast, their attack forgotten.
"Run!" Milo shouted, grabbing Mrs. Pennyworth's hand.
They sprinted out of the deli, slammed the door, and collapsed against the wall, panting.
"That… was the single weirdest fight of my life," Mrs. Pennyworth wheezed.
"And I once interrogated a parrot for a jewelry theft," Milo added.
Suddenly, headlights lit up the street. A sleek black food truck rolled into view, the logo on its side reading "Sam's Sandwich Studio: Mobile Division."
The back door of the truck opened, and there stood Sandwich Sam, holding the Mega Sandwich high like a king with his crown.
"Well done, Detective," Sam called. "You survived the appetizer course."
Then he tossed something onto the ground - a mustard packet, perfectly balanced. It exploded in a puff of yellow mist as the truck roared away into the night.
Milo wiped mustard off his face. "Tomorrow," he growled, "we end this."
