The bits I do remember from my early childhood are not good. My parents argued constantly, and their fights often turned physical. I remember cowering in my room, trying to block out the sound of their raised voices and the thuds of their fists. I would often hear my mother threatening my father, using me as a weapon in their war.
If you don't come back, you'll never see Emma again, she would say, her voice filled with anger and desperation. I was just a child, but I could sense the fear and pain in her words. It broke my heart to know that my own mother would use me as a bargaining chip in their toxic relationship.
My mother had already been through one failed marriage with my brother Lee's biological father. He was an alcoholic who was in and out of our lives, leaving us with a sense of instability and insecurity. My father, on the other hand, was a debt collector for the local drug dealer and had a shady past as a bus driver. He was a charming man, but he had a dark side that he couldn't seem to control.
As the years went by, the arguing between my parents only grew worse. The bond between me, Lee, and our mother grew weaker, and I felt increasingly unloved and alone. I longed for a sense of stability and security, but it seemed like a distant dream in our tumultuous household.
By the time I was 12, things had reached a breaking point. My parents' fights were more frequent and more violent than ever before. I often found myself acting as a mediator, trying to calm them down and keep the peace. But it was becoming harder and harder to ignore the cracks in our family's foundation.
One night, as I lay in bed listening to the familiar sounds of shouting and crashing furniture, I made a decision. I couldn't continue living in fear and chaos. I knew that something had to change, and it had to change soon.
The next morning, I gathered my courage and approached my mother. I told her that I couldn't live like this anymore, that I needed something better for myself and for Lee. I begged her to consider leaving my father, to finally put an end to their toxic relationship.
At first, my mother was reluctant. She was scared of being alone, of starting over in a world that seemed so hostile and unforgiving. But as she looked into my eyes, she saw the pain and determination that burned within me. And she knew that I was right.
