The tunnel beneath St. Michael's Church was narrow and cold.
Ancient stone walls surrounded Emily, Victoria, Walker, and Luca as they moved deeper into the darkness. The only light came from Emily's flashlight, its beam dancing across faded carvings and forgotten graves.
No one spoke.
The sound of distant gunfire from above had faded.
Victoria slowed her pace.
"They've reached Father Michael."
Emily looked at her.
"We don't know that."
Victoria stopped walking.
"I know Volkov."
"If Father Michael stayed behind..."
"...he stayed to protect us."
Emily wanted to say something reassuring.
Instead, she gently squeezed Victoria's shoulder.
"We'll make sure his sacrifice means something."
Victoria gave a small nod.
"I hope so."
Above them, inside the church...
Volkov calmly walked through the shattered sanctuary.
Broken pews covered the floor.
Candles had been knocked over, filling the air with smoke.
Father Michael stood alone before the altar.
He looked tired.
But not afraid.
Volkov smiled politely.
"It's been many years."
Father Michael answered quietly.
"Not long enough."
Volkov glanced around the empty church.
"You sent them away."
"I did."
"You've always protected those children."
"They're not children anymore."
"No."
Volkov's smile faded.
"That's what makes them dangerous."
He stepped closer.
"Where are they going?"
Father Michael remained silent.
Volkov sighed.
"I was hoping we could avoid this."
The priest met his eyes.
"You've spent your life choosing violence."
"I chose hope."
For a brief moment, neither man moved.
Then Volkov turned away.
"Search the church."
His men spread through the building.
One of them shouted from the office.
"The room is empty!"
Volkov looked back at Father Michael.
"You've bought them time."
The old priest smiled.
"Sometimes..."
"...time is all people need."
The tunnel opened into a forgotten underground cemetery.
Rows of stone crypts stretched into the darkness.
Emily shivered.
"This place is enormous."
Luca examined the walls.
"These catacombs are older than the city above."
Victoria's eyes fell upon a familiar symbol carved into one of the stone doors.
A globe resting on a man's shoulders.
Atlas.
"The key," she whispered.
She removed the small brass key Father Michael had given her.
There was a tiny keyhole hidden beneath the carving.
Victoria inserted the key.
With a heavy rumble, the stone door slowly opened.
Beyond it lay a small circular chamber.
Unlike the vault beneath the warehouse, this room wasn't filled with documents.
It was filled with memories.
Family photographs.
Children's drawings.
Maria Moretti's jewelry.
Gabriel's favorite toy train.
Victoria picked it up with trembling hands.
"I gave this to him for his fifth birthday."
Emily watched quietly.
Everything in the room told the same story.
Alessandro hadn't hidden these things because they were valuable.
He had hidden them because they were precious.
On a stone pedestal rested another envelope.
It bore only one name.
Victoria.
She carefully unfolded the letter.
My dearest daughter,
If you have found this room, then you are finally ready to know who you really are.
You were never meant to inherit my empire.
I wanted you to inherit your mother's kindness.
Victoria's vision blurred.
She continued reading.
If you are standing here beside someone you trust, hold on to them.
Power fades.
Money disappears.
Fear never lasts.
But love...
Love is the only thing that survives us.
Emily looked away, giving Victoria privacy.
Yet those final words echoed in her own heart.
Walker stepped toward another cabinet.
Inside was an old city map.
Several locations had been circled in red.
One address stood out.
An abandoned psychiatric hospital on the outskirts of New York.
Luca frowned.
"What is this place?"
Victoria searched her memory.
"My father owned the land."
Emily looked closer.
"The final truth..."
"...could be there."
Before anyone could answer, Walker's phone vibrated.
He listened for only a few seconds before his expression darkened.
"What is it?" Emily asked.
Walker looked at the group.
"Father Michael is alive."
Relief washed over Victoria.
"But..."
Walker continued.
"Volkov has taken him."
Silence fell over the chamber.
Victoria closed her eyes.
"He stayed behind to save us."
Emily stepped beside her.
"And now we save him."
Victoria looked at Emily.
For a long moment, neither woman spoke.
The walls between them felt thinner than ever.
Victoria reached out instinctively.
Their hands met.
This time, neither of them pulled away.
It wasn't a declaration of love.
Not yet.
It was something quieter.
A promise.
Whatever came next...
They would face it together.
Far above the catacombs, Adrian Volkov sat in the back of a black car.
Across from him sat Father Michael, his hands bound but his expression calm.
Volkov studied him for a moment.
"You still believe they can stop me."
Father Michael smiled faintly.
"No."
"I believe they can save each other."
Volkov looked out at the New York skyline.
"We'll see."
The car disappeared into the night.
Unaware that every mile brought them closer to the place where the greatest secret of the Moretti family had been hidden for more than twenty years.
