The bells of St. Michael's Church echoed through Harlem as dawn broke over New York.
The church was small, its stone walls worn by time. Ivy climbed across the old bricks, and stained-glass windows glowed softly in the morning light.
Emily parked the car a block away.
"We should assume Volkov knows we're coming."
Victoria nodded.
"He always seems to."
Walker checked the street through binoculars.
"No visible surveillance."
Luca gave a dry smile.
"That doesn't mean we're alone."
Together, they crossed the street and entered the church.
The sanctuary was quiet.
Candles flickered beneath a large wooden cross.
An elderly priest knelt in the front pew, finishing a prayer.
Without turning around, he spoke.
"I wondered how long it would take."
Victoria froze.
"You know who I am?"
The priest slowly stood and faced them.
His white hair framed a tired but kind face.
"I baptized you, Victoria."
His eyes filled with sadness.
"And your brother."
Victoria felt her throat tighten.
"Father Michael..."
He smiled gently.
"You've grown so much."
For a brief moment, Victoria wasn't the feared head of the Moretti family.
She was a little girl standing in a church she barely remembered.
They followed Father Michael into a modest office behind the chapel.
Old books lined the shelves.
Family photographs covered one wall.
The priest unlocked a wooden cabinet and removed a faded leather box.
"I promised your parents I would never open this unless you came looking for the truth."
He placed it on the table.
Victoria hesitated before lifting the lid.
Inside were photographs of her family.
Letters tied together with blue ribbon.
A silver pocket watch.
And a videotape labeled:
For Victoria and Gabriel.
Emily looked at the tape.
"Do you have anything that can play it?"
Father Michael nodded.
"I never had the heart to throw away the old television."
Minutes later, the tape began to play.
The image flickered before stabilizing.
A younger Alessandro Moretti appeared on the screen.
He looked tired.
Afraid.
"If you're watching this..."
"...then I couldn't protect you."
Victoria stared silently at the screen.
"I have told many lies."
"I changed our family name."
"I hid Gabriel."
"I kept secrets from you."
"But I did it because Adrian Volkov wanted both of my children."
Emily glanced toward Victoria.
She never looked away from the screen.
Alessandro continued.
"Gabriel wasn't taken because he was weak."
"He was taken because he witnessed something no child should ever see."
Victoria's breathing became shallow.
"What did he see?" she whispered.
The answer came immediately.
"He saw the person who murdered your mother."
The room fell completely silent.
The tape suddenly crackled.
The picture distorted.
Then Alessandro spoke one final sentence.
"The person who killed Maria..."
"...was someone our family trusted."
The tape ended.
No name.
Only static.
Victoria stared at the blank screen.
Her entire world had shifted again.
"My father knew."
Father Michael lowered his head.
"He carried that guilt every day."
A loud crash echoed from the church above.
Walker was on his feet instantly.
"Everyone down."
Another crash.
Then shouting.
Luca peered through the office window.
"They're here."
Masked figures poured into the church.
Black Vipers.
At least a dozen.
Volkov had found them.
Father Michael looked at Victoria.
"There isn't much time."
He hurried to another bookshelf and pulled out a worn Bible.
Inside, hidden between the pages, was a small brass key.
He pressed it into Victoria's hand.
"Your father told me to give you this."
"What does it open?" Emily asked.
The priest smiled sadly.
"I don't know."
"But he said..."
"...it unlocks the final truth."
Gunfire erupted upstairs.
Wood splintered.
Stained glass shattered.
Walker drew his weapon.
"We have to move!"
Father Michael pointed toward a narrow stone staircase hidden behind the office.
"It leads to the old catacombs."
Victoria looked at him.
"What about you?"
The priest gently shook his head.
"If I run..."
"They'll follow."
Emily understood immediately.
"You'll stay behind."
He smiled peacefully.
"My time has been a blessing."
"But yours..."
He looked at Victoria.
"...is only beginning."
Victoria embraced him without saying a word.
He placed a trembling hand on her shoulder.
"Your mother would be proud of the woman you've become."
Tears filled Victoria's eyes.
She hadn't heard those words since she was a child.
As the others disappeared into the hidden passage, Father Michael quietly closed the stone door behind them.
The last thing Victoria heard before the door sealed shut...
Was the church doors bursting open.
And Adrian Volkov's calm voice echoing through the sanctuary.
"Good morning, Father."
Deep beneath the church, Emily reached over and gently took Victoria's hand.
Victoria looked at her in surprise.
Emily didn't say anything.
She didn't need to.
Sometimes, silence said more than words ever could.
Ahead of them, the dark tunnel stretched into the unknown.
And somewhere behind them...
Father Michael was about to face the man who had haunted the Moretti family for more than twenty years.
