Rain fell steadily over New York as Emily stepped through the doors of FBI Headquarters.
Every eye in the room turned toward her.
Some looked relieved.
Others looked suspicious.
Assistant Director Walker stood outside the conference room, his arms folded.
"You look like hell."
Emily managed a tired smile.
"I've had better days."
Walker motioned for her to follow.
Inside, a large map of New York covered the wall. Red markers had appeared across Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan.
"What happened while I was gone?" Emily asked.
Walker took a deep breath.
"Someone launched coordinated attacks on Moretti businesses."
Emily frowned.
"The Moretti family?"
Walker nodded.
"Restaurants burned."
"Warehouses exploded."
"Millions disappeared from their accounts."
Emily slowly realized what it meant.
"They weren't attacking the FBI..."
"They were attacking Victoria."
Walker looked surprised.
"You sound concerned."
Emily quickly composed herself.
"I'm concerned because whoever did this is powerful enough to challenge both the Mafia and us."
Walker nodded.
"Exactly."
He placed a classified file on the table.
"Adrian Volkov."
Emily opened it.
Most of the pages were heavily redacted.
Only one sentence remained fully visible.
Status: Presumed deceased.
Emily looked up.
"He's alive."
Walker's expression froze.
"What did you say?"
"I saw him."
The room fell completely silent.
Meanwhile...
Victoria entered the Moretti estate.
The silence inside was worse than any battlefield.
Broken glass covered the marble floor.
Several portraits had been destroyed.
Staff members avoided looking her in the eyes.
Luca approached.
"We've confirmed the damage."
Victoria removed her soaked coat.
"Tell me."
"We lost nearly forty percent of our cash reserves."
"Our shipping network has collapsed."
"And..."
He hesitated.
Victoria looked directly at him.
"What?"
"Someone leaked every one of our safe houses."
Victoria closed her eyes.
"There really is a traitor."
Luca nodded.
"And they've been working with Volkov."
Later that afternoon...
Emily sat alone in her office.
She couldn't stop thinking about Victoria.
She replayed every conversation.
Every glance.
Every decision.
Nothing matched the image painted by the FBI files.
A knock interrupted her thoughts.
Walker entered carrying two cups of coffee.
"You've been quiet."
Emily accepted the coffee.
"I keep wondering if we've been asking the wrong questions."
Walker raised an eyebrow.
"What do you mean?"
"What if taking down the Moretti family isn't our biggest problem anymore?"
Walker remained silent.
Emily continued.
"What if Volkov is?"
Walker looked out the window.
"I've been asking myself the same thing."
Across the city...
Victoria stood in front of her father's portrait.
She had done so countless times over the years.
But today felt different.
"They're destroying everything you built," she whispered.
"I don't know if I can stop them."
Her reflection stared back from the polished glass.
For the first time since becoming head of the Moretti family...
She doubted herself.
A soft knock came at the door.
Luca entered.
"We found something."
He handed her a small silver pendant recovered from one of the dead Black Vipers.
Victoria's face changed instantly.
"No..."
Luca frowned.
"You recognize it?"
Victoria nodded slowly.
"This belonged to my brother."
Luca stared at her.
"You told me your brother died as a child."
Victoria looked at the pendant, her hands trembling ever so slightly.
"So did I."
Silence filled the room.
If the pendant truly belonged to him...
Then someone had lied to her for nearly twenty years.
At FBI Headquarters...
Emily received an anonymous envelope.
No stamp.
No return address.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed Victoria standing beside a young boy, both smiling at the camera.
Written across the back were five words.
Ask her about Gabriel.
Emily frowned.
There had never been any mention of a brother in Victoria's FBI file.
Who was Gabriel?
And why would someone want her to ask?
She slipped the photograph into her jacket.
Whatever the answer was...
It could change everything.
Night settled over Manhattan.
Victoria stood alone on the balcony of the estate, the city lights reflecting in her blue eyes.
Somewhere out there...
Volkov was planning his next move.
And somewhere else...
Emily Carter was probably trying to understand the truth.
Victoria whispered into the cold night air.
"I hope you never have to choose between your duty..."
"...and your heart."
She didn't realize those words applied to herself just as much.
Far away, in an abandoned church on the outskirts of the city, Adrian Volkov lit a candle.
A shadow stepped out from behind the altar.
Volkov smiled.
"It's time."
The figure finally stepped into the light.
Victoria would have recognized him instantly.
But she wasn't there.
The man looked up, revealing piercing blue eyes almost identical to Victoria's.
"My sister still believes I'm dead," he said quietly.
Volkov nodded.
"For now."
The man smiled without warmth.
"But not for much longer."
