CHAPTER SIX:
THE RECKONING
At
exactly midnight, Maya sat alone in her shop, waiting. She'd sent her creations into hiding, not wanting them caught in the crossfire of what was to come.
The door burst open. Sterling stormed in, face contorted with rage, the ouroboros visibly shifting on his wrist.
"What have you done?" he snarled.
"I've bound you to the truth," Maya said, standing her ground despite her fear. "The ouroboros doesn't just represent eternity, Victor. It represents cosmic balance. Actions returning to their source."
The serpent began to glow, writhing on Sterling's skin. He clawed at it frantically, but the tattoo held fast.
"Remove it!" he shouted. "Now!"
"I can't. The binding is complete."
Suddenly, the chimera materialized beside Sterling, but something had changed. Its eyes, once clouded with Sterling's influence, were clear now. It turned slowly, regarding its master with a new awareness.
"They can't be controlled," Maya said quietly. "Not truly. You can corrupt them temporarily, but in the end, they return to their true nature."
The ouroboros slithered completely free of Sterling's wrist, growing to the size of a python as it coiled in the air between them. Its voice echoed in the room, audible to both of them.
*"Victor Sterling, you who would enslave living art, you are bound by your own deceptions. The truth will be revealed."*
Sterling's face drained of color. "What truth?"
*"You are not the first to seek this power. Your family did not collect occult knowledge - they stole it, destroyed the creators, and claimed the credit. Your fortune is built on blood and theft."*
"No," Sterling whispered, backing away. "That's not true."
"The ouroboros sees all," Maya said. "Past, present, future. It knows your family's history - how they murdered my ancestor in Spain after stealing his techniques. How they've hunted others like me through generations."
The serpent continued relentlessly, revealing every dark secret Sterling had buried - the rivals he'd ruined, the experiments on unwitting subjects, the true source of his supposed genius.
With each revelation, Sterling seemed to physically diminish, his confident facade crumbling.
"Stop this," he begged. "I'll give you anything."
"I don't want anything from you," Maya replied. "But the ouroboros requires balance. For every action, a consequence."
As if on cue, Sterling's phone began to chime with notifications. His face went ashen as he checked the screen.
"What's happening?" he demanded.
"The truth is being restored," Maya said simply. "Every stolen idea returned to its creator. Every victim compensated. Every crime exposed."
Sterling lunged for her, but the chimera intercepted him, pinning him against the wall with a massive paw.
"They're extensions of me," Maya explained, "but they have their own will. The chimera chose to protect me because it's right, not because I commanded it."
By dawn, Sterling's empire was in free fall. Anonymous tips to journalists and authorities had exposed decades of corporate espionage, plagiarism, and corruption. The stock of his company plummeted as former employees came forward with evidence they'd mysteriously "remembered" overnight.
As the first light of morning streamed through the windows, the inked creatures returned to their hosts - all except the ouroboros, which remained coiled around Sterling's wrist, a permanent reminder of his downfall.
"It will never leave you," Maya told him as the chimera released him. "It will ensure you never harm another creator."
