A flash of light, a faint gurgle, and blurred shapes swimming in her vision—then she was awake.
She lay on a narrow bed beneath thin blankets. Machines hummed softly to her left, their steady rhythm filling the room. Tubes tugged at her arms and face, and beneath the covers, she could feel the tight pull of bandages wrapped around her body.
But she didn’t know why.
In fact, she didn’t know much of anything.
Her name. Where she was from. How she had ended up here.
The questions came all at once, tangling and tightening in her mind until she could barely think.
Her breathing quickened, anxiety rising sharp and sudden, and one of the machines at her side began to beep. Footsteps approached the door, followed by low voices murmuring just outside.
Oh no… she thought.
What if I’m in danger? What if I’ve been kidnapped? Her eyes scanned the room, looking for anything, but her vision was obscured due to how she was placed in the bed.
A weapon? Nothing but unfamiliar medical equipment and standard hospital furniture.
Any escape? Two doors, one of them likely a bathroom.
The handle turned before she could think any further.
A man stepped inside, dressed in a lab coat and round glasses, followed closely by a woman holding a clipboard.
“Oh, it seems our patient is finally awake.”
He crossed the room toward her bedside.
The nurse followed in plain white scrubs, already writing on her clipboard as she moved to the machines.
The man glanced over the monitors as he spoke.
“Hello. My name is Dr. Beverly. You’re in a recovery center called Hopeful Horizons.”
As he adjusted something beside her, she tried to look toward the nurse—and realized she couldn’t.
She couldn’t turn her head. She couldn’t move her arms. She couldn’t move at all.
A surge of panic hit her, sharp and overwhelming. Her breathing spiked again, and the machines responded with a sharper, faster rhythm.
I can’t feel my body. What has happened to me? Her panicked thoughts began racing through her brain all at once. He turned to her with a calm, practiced steadiness.
“Your body isn’t responding right now, but that’s temporary. You’re safe. You’re not in danger.”
He said before pulling out a small flash light.
“Can you blink for me?” She did.
“Good. Now blink once for yes, twice for no.”
He began asking questions. Could she move any part of her body? Two blinks. Could she feel pressure against her leg? Two blinks. Could she speak? Two blinks. After a few more questions, he nodded and gestured toward the nurse.
“This is Nurse Grady. She’ll be checking on you, monitoring your vitals, and using the blink method to communicate with you until you regain speech.” He paused, something uncertain passing across his face.
“I’m sure you have questions. A lot of them. But right now, your recovery needs to come first. We’ll go over everything once you’re stronger.” He paused, then added gently
“I’ll have Nurse Grady give you something to help you rest. We’ll talk more tomorrow.” He offered a reassuring smile and turned toward the door.
She forced her breathing to quicken again. She needed something before he left.
He stopped, turning back to her.
“Are you uncomfortable?” Two blinks.
“Is it something else?” One blink.
He frowned slightly, thinking. The nurse leaned in and whispered something to him.
“Oh—right. Is it your name?” Her eyes squeezed shut in a firm blink.” He stepped back to her bedside.
“Of course. Your name is Pearl. Pearl Chambers.” Relief flooded through her. Her eyes shimmered faintly.
Pearl… How pretty…
“It was very touch and go during your surgery, Ms. Chambers,” he continued. “You’re very fortunate to be alive. Remember that. Get some rest.”
With that, he left the room.
Now it was just her and Nurse Grady. Pearl shifted her gaze toward her.
The nurse cleared her throat softly before speaking.
“Your vitals look good, and you’re exactly where you should be in your recovery,” she said, her voice low, gentle—soothing the edges of panic. “I’m going to give you something to help you rest. Are you comfortable? I can adjust the bed if you’d like. Not too much, but enough so you can see more of the room.”
Pearl blinked.
The nurse picked up a nearby controller and raised the bed slightly. The shift gave Pearl a better view of the room. As Nurse Grady administered medication into the IV, Pearl’s thoughts drifted.
Strange… there are no windows.
The room was larger than she’d first realized.
Must be nice for families… Families..
Do I have a family?
Her thoughts were interrupted by the nurse’s voice.
“You won’t be awake much longer,” she said. “So for now, just focus on recovering. You’ll have your answers tomorrow.”
She turned toward the door, but paused just before leaving.
“It’s… very important to me that you recover.” She hesitated, then shook her head slightly.
“I’m sorry—that came out wrong. We all worked very hard to save you. I just want you to have a good life.” A quiet pause. Eye contact that didn’t quite feel like reassurance.
“Sleep well, Ms. Chambers.”
Then she left. Silence settled over the room.
I wonder how bad the accident was… Pearl thought.
If it even was an accident.
A darker thought surfaced.
Maybe I… did this to myself. She pushed it away—but it lingered, heavy and uncertain. She didn’t know who she had been before this. Did she have a family? Friends? Anyone waiting for her? Everyone here seemed deeply invested in her recovery.
I hope I heal well too…
Her thoughts began to blur as her vision softened.
That medicine works fast.. The drowsiness came on quickly, heavy and unavoidable, but she didn’t fight it.
Today had been overwhelming.
Tomorrow would bring answers.
I am safe…
I am being monitored…
I need to heal…
Her thoughts faded as sleep pulled her under.
