The return of the Sol-Invictus to Aurelia was met with the thunderous ringing of a million crystal carillons.
Under the brilliant, overlapping light of the ring-world’s triple suns, the turquoise seas gleamed like polished gemstones.
Across the emerald continents and ivory spires, banners of the Sunblood Phoenix and the Night Court Raven fluttered side by side in the warm cedar breeze.
Within the Great Hall of Conclave at the apex of the Sun-Emperor’s Citadel, the highest authorities of the newly restored Dual Empire assembled.
At the head of the circular amphitheater of white orichalcum sat the twin thrones.
Seraphina was radiant in an imperial gown of woven dawn-silk and white dragon scales, the Crown of Caelum resting upon her dark curls and the Scepter of the Astral Sovereign cradled in her lap.
Beside her, Kaelen Vance occupied the Consort’s Dais with effortless, lethal majesty.
His dark velvet tunic was trimmed with silver runic embroidery, his broad shoulders squared, his molten silver eyes lazily appraising the dignitaries with the calm detachment of a predator at rest.
The Obsidian Ring of the Void-Consort hummed quietly upon his finger, catching the triple sunlight in deep violet prisms.
Before them stood High Elder Solan, General Aurelius, and twelve provincial prefects representing the reclaimed frontier colonies of the Sol system, Caelum’s Reach, and the ring-world of Aurelia.
In the center of the hall, a three-dimensional projection of the Abyssal Meridian rotated, highlighting the nine awakening pods in the Void-Cluster of Nihil.
"The threat cannot be overstated," Solan began, his ancient voice solemn as he leaned upon his staff of sunstone.
"For ten millennia, we believed the First Cataclysm was a localized tragedy. We now know that our galaxy has been an isolated sanctuary, sheltered behind the Kuiper Gate while the Void-Mother guarded the nursery of horrors beyond. If the Sovereign of Iron and Rot reaches full awakening, its biomechanical plague could infect entire planetary systems within days."
"Then we strike first," General Aurelius growled, resting his heavy gauntlet on the pommel of his broadsword.
"The Star-Forge on Earth's moon is producing five super-dreadnoughts every planetary cycle. The Gilded Wing can muster two hundred capital ships within three months. We should fortify the Tartarus Gate and wait for them to enter the choke-point."
"No," Kaelen’s deep, velvety baritone cut through the hall, carrying the unyielding weight of an apex warlord.
The council hushed instantly.
"Choke-points fail against an enemy that feeds on entropy," Kaelen rumbled, leaning forward, resting his forearms on his knees.
His molten silver eyes swept across the assembly, cold and razor-sharp.
"If we wait at Tartarus, we fight the war in our front yard. We turn our colonies into battlegrounds and bleed our people dry. The Nine Harbingers sleep in the Outer Rift. We do not build walls, General. We build an expeditionary armada. We take the war to Nihil before the first pod opens."
Murmurs of shock and nervous hesitation rippled through the provincial lords.
To leave the safety of the charted galaxies and plunge into the intergalactic void was an endeavor unheard of in ten thousand years.
"Grand Marshal Vance is correct," Seraphina spoke, her voice ringing clear, commanding, and unshakable.
The council turned their full attention to their High Queen.
Her amber eyes burned with the calm, diagnostic clarity that had guided her through a hundred life-and-death emergencies.
"In medicine, you do not let an infection fester at the margins of a wound. You excise it cleanly before it reaches the bloodstream. We will leave fifty dreadnoughts and the lunar defense grid to protect Earth, Caelum, and Aurelia. But the Sol-Invictus and the main strike fleet will chart the Abyssal Meridian."
She paused, rising gracefully from the throne of starlight.
The aura of the Sunblood flared behind her in majestic, twenty-foot wings of golden light, illuminating the amphitheater in blinding splendor.
"We will not hide behind our gates any longer. The Dawn does not fear the dark—it drives it away. By decree of the Three Suns, the Extragalactic Crusade is declared!"
Every lord, general, and prelate in the hall dropped to one knee, their fists slamming against their chests in thunderous unison:
"Long live High Queen Seraphina! Long live Grand Marshal Vance! Hail the Dual Empire!"
When the council adjourned to begin mobilizing the grand fleet, the massive double doors of orichalcum swung shut, leaving Seraphina and Kaelen alone in the quiet grandeur of the conclave hall.
Seraphina let out a soft sigh, the formal imperial posture melting away as she stepped down the dais steps.
Before her feet touched the marble floor, Kaelen rose and intercepted her, his strong arms sliding effortlessly around her waist and pulling her flush against his broad chest.
"You were magnificent up there, little sun," Kaelen purred against her lips, his fingers tracing the curve of her waist with slow, intoxicating warmth.
"A true empress of fire and blood."
Seraphina smiled, winding her arms around his neck, her fingers threading through his dark hair.
"I learned from the best, Vance. Now tell me... how many ships do we really need to conquer a cluster of dead gods?"
Kaelen’s lips curled into that dangerous, breathtaking smirk that always set her heart racing.
"Just enough to carry our army, my love," he whispered, dipping his head to capture her mouth in a slow, deep, devastatingly passionate kiss. "The rest... we take from their ashes."
