The shattered remains of the Palace of the Weeping Mirror hung in eerie, reverent silence.
Below the jagged soul-glass terrace, the Eye of Tartarus spun quietly, its violent accretion disk tamed by the severance of the anti-matter feeder lines.
Above the shattered neutron throne, the ancient black-iron pedestal hummed with forgotten, primordial etheric frequency, casting a massive three-dimensional holographic map forty paces into the air.
It was not a map of any charted quadrant in the Milky Way or the Sunblood territories.
It was a panoramic projection of the intergalactic void.
A glowing, crimson hyper-lane—known in ancient Enochian scripts as the Abyssal Meridian—bridged the gap between their home galaxy and the Void-Cluster of Nihil, an uncharted super-cluster of dying red giants and necrotic ring-worlds three million light-years away.
Pulsing along the Meridian were nine gargantuan obsidian markers, each radiating a distinct, malignant biological frequency.
"These aren't military bastions," Seraphina whispered, stepping closer to the projection.
Her white dragon-scale armor gleamed under the holographic light, her golden crescent mark thrumming with deep, wary resonance.
Her paramedic training instinctively broke down the data, analyzing the bio-energetic signatures hovering before her.
"They are dormancy pods. Planetary-scale incubation sarcophagi. The Void-Mother was not the supreme sovereign of the Abyss... she was merely the warden."
"The Nine Harbingers of the Outer Dark," Kaelen Vance murmured, stepping up beside her.
His broad, scarred hand slipped gently into the small of her back, his touch grounding and intensely warm against the lingering chill of the terrace.
His dark-matter wings were retracted beneath his obsidian cloak, but his molten silver eyes were sharp, calculating the grim tactical reality laid out before them.
"Ancient legends of the Night Court spoke of elder gods who were cast out of the primordial continuum before the First Dawn ever ignited a star. When the Void-Mother’s mask shattered, its psychic death-pulse triggered an automated awakening sequence."
"How long do we have before they open?" Seraphina asked, looking up into his chiseled face.
"Months. Perhaps a year," Kaelen answered, his jaw tightening into hard stone.
"The first pod—the Sovereign of Iron and Rot—is already registering fifty percent vital reactivation in the Outer Rift."
A soft, mechanical chime echoed from the comm-beads at their collars.
The three-dimensional projection of General Aurelius materialized at the edge of the terrace, the old warrior snapping his fist to his chest in a crisp, thunderous salute.
"High Queen, Grand Marshal," Aurelius reported, his weathered face alight with fierce pride.
"The Gilded Wing has secured the perimeter of Tartarus. The remaining Abyssal Harvesters have surrendered or scuttled their engines. The Sol-Invictus is holding position above the palace to retrieve you."
"Stand down weapons, General," Seraphina ordered, her voice ringing with the calm, unshakable authority of an empress who had crossed the gates of death and returned.
"Prepare the fleet for an immediate jump back to Aurelia. We have won the battle for our galaxy... but our war has expanded into the Great Beyond."
"At once, Your Majesty!" Aurelius bowed deeply before the transmission blinked out.
As the Sol-Invictus descended through the cleared clouds of Tartarus, casting its warm golden hull-lights over the dark terrace, Seraphina reached out, her fingers lightly tracing the glowing crimson path of the Abyssal Meridian.
"From a small trauma bay in Chicago... to defending an entire galactic cluster," she murmured with a soft, breathtaking laugh that carried both wonder and exhaustion.
Kaelen stepped close, eliminating the final whisper of space between them.
He caught her waist in his strong, calloused hands, lifting her effortlessly until her amber eyes were level with his.
His molten silver gaze was dark, smoky with an intoxicating, possessive hunger that made her pulse skip a beat.
"You were never meant for a small life, little sun," Kaelen growled huskily, his breath hot and sweet against her lips.
"You were born to burn across the stars. And wherever those nine horrors wake... I will lead your armies, break their bones, and lay their crowns at your feet."
Seraphina smiled, wrapping her arms around his neck, letting her fingers thread through the thick, dark waves of his hair.
"Just make sure you stay by my side, Vance."
"Always," Kaelen promised, his voice dropping into a low, rumbling purr.
He brought his mouth down upon hers in a slow, deep, devastatingly sensual kiss that banished the darkness of Tartarus, sealing their vow under the light of the extragalactic stars.
The Star-Forge had reclaimed their home.
Now, the voyage into the Great Beyond was ready to begin.
