Leaving the smoking corpse of the Abyssal Scourge wedged between the defense pylons, Seraphina and Kaelen crossed the airless docking threshold into the interior of the Star-Forge of Aethelgard.
The transition across the station’s atmospheric barrier was instantaneous.
The suffocating void was replaced by pure, pressurized air that smelled faintly of dry desert sand, hot iron, and ancient incense.
Gravity here was crisp and natural, generated not by machinery, but by the slow, majestic rotation of the twenty-league orbital ring around its captive star.
They walked down a colossal colonnade of polished white orichalcum.
Titanic pillars, carved in the likeness of ancient celestial seraphs and lunar sovereigns holding aloft celestial orbs, stretched two miles toward the central hub.
Beneath their boots, the polished floor was transparent diamond-glass, offering an unbroken view of the cratered gray surface of the moon rolling silently beneath them.
At the center of the station lay the Sanctum of the Ignition Core.
The chamber was an amphitheater of cosmic scale, suspended directly inside the shadow of the red giant star.
Outside the multi-layered magnetic shields, the dying star pulsed like a colossal, weeping heart of crimson plasma, casting deep, dramatic red shadows across the ancient consoles.
In the center of the amphitheater stood the Anvil of Dawn—a massive altar of black meteoric iron embedded with a crystalline matrix that channeled the solar winds directly into the station’s weapon-foundries.
Hovering above the anvil was a hovering sphere of liquid golden ether: the Heart of the Forge.
"It’s dormant," Seraphina observed, her amber eyes wide with reverence as they ascended the low orichalcum steps.
Her twenty-foot wings of starlight fluttered against her back, humming in sympathetic resonance with the slumbering stellar engine.
"The magnetic containment fields around the red giant are degrading. Without a master ignition to recalibrate the containment rings, the star will collapse into a white dwarf within forty-eight hours, dragging this entire station into a gravitational singularity."
"Then we wake it," Kaelen rumbled beside her.
He had sheathed Gloom-Weaver, but his molten silver eyes were sharp, scanning the vaulted shadows of the chamber.
He stepped up behind her at the edge of the altar, his hands resting naturally on her armored hips, grounding her with his steadying, familiar warmth. His chest pressed lightly against her shoulder blades, his breath stirring the loose tendrils of auburn hair at her temple.
"The ignition ritual requires two keys, little sun," Kaelen murmured, his deep baritone sending a delicious shiver down her spine.
"The ancestral blood of the Sun-King to kindle the flame... and the void-essence of the Night-Sovereign to compress the flare into stable fusion."
"Sun and Shadow," she whispered, turning in his embrace to look up into his striking, angular face.
A fond, slightly breathless smile curved her lips. "Seems like the universe has a pattern with us, Vance."
"A pattern I have no intention of breaking," Kaelen purred, his gaze darkening with that raw, intoxicating hunger that made her knees feel weak.
He leaned down, his mouth brushing the sensitive hollow below her ear, trailing a path of slow, searing kisses down her throat to the golden crescent mark burning at her collarbone.
Seraphina arched into his touch with a soft, helpless gasp, her fingers tangling in his dark hair, pulling him closer against her skin.
Even in the heart of an ancient orbital war-foundry, with a dying star breathing against the glass, the magnetic heat between them was all-consuming.
When his lips finally met hers, the kiss was deep, slow, and breathtakingly possessive—a sealing of vows between monarchs who held the fate of two worlds in their clasped hands.
When they parted, breathing hard, Kaelen’s silver eyes were molten with quiet resolve.
He drew his ceremonial dagger, slicing a clean, shallow cut across his palm before pressing the dark-matter blade into her hand.
Seraphina mirrored the motion, cutting her own palm, letting her pure, incandescent Sunblood well up along her lifeline.
Together, they reached toward the floating sphere above the Anvil of Dawn.
They clasped their bleeding palms together inside the liquid golden ether, their blood mingling in a brilliant flash of celestial dawn and midnight void.
"Awaken, Aethelgard," Seraphina commanded, her voice ringing with sovereign authority.
The Star-Forge answered.
