The obsidian spire at the center of the command bridge throbbed like an infected heart.
Beneath the crystalline surface, thick rivers of weeping black void-matter coursed through cybernetic neural cables, pumping catastrophic acceleration commands into the dreadnought’s massive sub-light engines.
Through the panoramic void-glass of the bridge, the Star-Forge of Aethelgard expanded by the second.
The four-mile iron bulk of the Abyssal Scourge was closing the final five leagues at terrifying velocity, its ramming prow pointed dead center at the fragile magnetic containment sphere encasing the dying red giant star.
"Two minutes until impact!" Seraphina shouted over the deafening wail of the ship's proximity alarms.
She didn't flinch.
Placing her bare palms flat against the oily surface of the neural spire, Seraphina reached deep into her core. She bypassed the standard etheric channels and tapped directly into the primordial relic embedded in her aura—the Solar Dynamo of Ra.
A blinding, incandescent flare of solar fire erupted from her chest.
Her golden crescent mark flared at her throat, burning with the intensity of a newborn sun. White-hot plasma poured from her hands straight into the dark crystal, sizzling through the corrupting void-matter with the merciless heat of a solar flare.
The neural spire shrieked—a high-pitched psychic wail that vibrated the fillings in her teeth.
The dark cables within began to thrash violently, sending massive surges of high-voltage bio-electricity back into the bridge consoles. Control panels exploded in showers of sparks, and the reinforced void-glass of the viewport began to web with hairline fractures under the immense etheric pressure.
"Containment breach imminent!" Seraphina gritted out through clenched teeth, her muscles locking as she fought the immense psychic backlash. "Kaelen, hold the line!"
Kaelen was already moving.
The High Sovereign stepped directly behind her, his eighty-foot shadow-wings flaring forward like an impenetrable fortress of dark matter, wrapping completely around Seraphina and the command dais.
He didn't just shield her physically; he slammed both gauntlets against the decking, anchoring their localized space within an absolute, immovable gravitational lock.
The crushing atmospheric pressure of the failing bridge beat against his wings, but his silver eyes burned with sovereign arrogance.
He pressed his broad, armored chest flush against Seraphina’s back, his arms coming around her waist to steady her trembling hands against the spire.
"I have you, little sun," Kaelen rumbled against the shell of her ear, his deep baritone vibrating through her bones like an immovable mountain. "Pour it in! Burn this rotting iron to cinder!"
Anchored by his unyielding strength and the intoxicating warmth of his proximity, Seraphina unleashed the full fury of the Dynamo.
"Overload!" she roared.
A pillar of pure thermonuclear dawn detonated within the core of the spire.
The five-thousand-degree solar fire raced along the neural cables like lightning traveling down a copper wire, screaming through the entire four-mile length of the dreadnought.
One by one, the ship’s primary plasma reactors flashed white and vaporized.
In the engine rooms miles behind them, the massive sub-light thrusters choked, their magnetic nozzles melting into useless slag. The violent acceleration ceased in an instant, replaced by the sickening lurch of sudden, catastrophic deceleration as the dead engines coughed out their final plumes of black smoke into the lunar vacuum.
Yet kinetic momentum was an unforgiving law of physics.
Even with its engines dead, the four-mile derelict drifted forward through the void on pure inertia, scraping along the outer adamantine defense pylons of the Star-Forge with a deafening screech that vibrated through both hulls.
Sparks the size of houses rained into the vacuum as the Abyssal Scourge slowed, finally grinding to a shuddering, permanent halt just fifty yards shy of the station’s primary solar containment sphere.
The bridge fell into sudden, breathtaking silence.
The neural spire had crumbled into a mound of smoking white ash between Seraphina's fingers.
Exhaling a ragged, trembling breath, she sagged backward, completely spent.
Kaelen caught her instantly, his arms tightening around her waist as he lifted her from the ash-covered floor, cradling her tightly against his chest. His shadow-wings slowly folded back into his midnight cloak, letting the dim, ambient crimson light of the nearby star fill the bridge.
"We stopped it," Seraphina breathed, resting her forehead against his jaw, her fingers curling weakly into the lapel of his armor.
Kaelen looked down at her, his silver eyes molten with a reverence so profound it made her throat tighten.
He leaned down, pressing his lips to hers in a slow, deep, devastatingly sensual kiss that tasted of ozone, heat, and salvation.
"You stopped it, my Queen," he whispered against her mouth, his hand gently tangling in her hair.
Then, through the cracked viewport, the docking ring of the Star-Forge began to cycle open, bathed in an ancient, welcoming azure light.
"The forge recognizes the Sunblood," Kaelen rumbled, turning his gaze to the opening portal. "The heart is waiting for you."
