The echoes of ten thousand cheering lords had faded into the quiet hum of twilight, leaving the Great Grand Hall bathed in the rich, deep violet of the setting fae sun.
Seraphina sat upon the throne of the Sunblood, carved from a single slab of warm, radiant sunstone that hummed against her spine like a purring hearth.
Her golden coronation gown pooled around her boots, the amber diamond of theCrown of Caelumcatching the evening light as she rested her chin against her palm. Beside her, separated only by a low armrest of entwined obsidian and gold, sat Kaelen Vance upon the throne of the Night Court.
The High Sovereign looked completely in his element—sprawled with casual, regal arrogance, one long leg slung over the arm of his obsidian chair, his ceremonial doublet unbuttoned at the throat to reveal the hard planes of his collarbone.
In his right hand, he twirled a goblet of dark spiced elder-wine, but his molten silver eyes weren't looking at the stained glass; they were fixed solely on his Queen.
"How does the seat fit, little sun?" Kaelen rumbled, his deep baritone smooth and rich in the empty hall.
Seraphina turned her head, a tired, amused smile touching her lips.
"It’s surprisingly comfortable," she admitted, shifting slightly against the warm stone. "Though I think my paramedic uniform had better lumbar support."
Kaelen chuckled, a low, intoxicating sound that vibrated across the quiet dais. He set his wine goblet aside, leaning across the shared armrest. His large, scarred hand reached out, his fingers sliding under her chin, tilting her face up to meet his intense gaze.
"You wore the crown as if you were born with it upon your brow," he murmured, his thumb gently tracing the soft curve of her jawline. "Every lord in this hall was ready to bleed for you before you even reached the dais."
"They're ready to bleed forus," Seraphina corrected softly, leaning into the warmth of his hand. "We proved that the two courts are stronger together than apart."
"True," Kaelen purred, his eyes darkening with a familiar, dangerous heat that made her pulse quicken. "Though some parts of the union are far more enjoyable than court politics."
He tugged gently on her chin, pulling her forward.
Seraphina didn't resist. She leaned across the divide between the two thrones, meeting his lips in a slow, deeply sensual kiss that tasted of spiced elder-wine, ancient cedar, and fierce, unyielding devotion. Kaelen’s arm wrapped around her waist, lifting her effortlessly across the armrest until she was straddling his lap, her gold-silk train spilling over his black velvet trousers.
She buried her fingers in his thick, dark hair, pressing closer against the hard wall of his chest as his hands traced possessively along the curve of her hips.
The silence of the throne room was broken by a soft, hesitant throat-clearing at the base of the hundred marble steps.
Seraphina pulled back with a breathless gasp, her face flushing crimson as she straightened her diadem.
Kaelen didn't let go of her waist; he merely turned his head toward the aisle, his silver eyes flashing with mild annoyance at the intrusion.
At the foot of the dais stoodLady Vespera, clutching a heavy, leather-bound tome of celestial star-charts against her chest, her pale cheeks tinged with faint embarrassment.
"Forgive me, High Sovereigns," Vespera bowed low, her voice echoing through the vaulted hall. "The celebration in the outer courts continues, but the astronomical sensors in the High Spire have registered an unprecedented anomaly."
Kaelen’s posture shifted, his sovereign focus instantly locking into place. "Speak, Vespera."
Vespera ascended the first twenty steps, opening the ancient tome to reveal a constellation map that had begun to burn with cold, emerald flame.
"The seven anchors we sealed on Earth stabilized the terrestrial leylines," Vespera explained, her voice trembling slightly. "However, the massive energy released during the Antarctic confrontation created a harmonic beacon that traveled far beyond the mortal stratosphere. It has awakened theStar-Forge of Aethelgard."
Seraphina frowned, her paramedic instincts sensing danger. "What is the Star-Forge?"
"The ancient orbital foundry of the Celestial Kings," Kaelen answered darkly, his grip on her waist tightening. "A colossal mega-structure orbiting the dark side of the moon, dormant since the First Cataclysm. It was built to forge world-cleaving weapons from dying stars."
"And it is no longer dormant," Vespera added grimly. "The remaining fleet of the Ashen Maw, led byVoid-Admiral Karrus, is currently en route to seize the forge's control core."
Seraphina looked into Kaelen's eyes, the quiet peace of their coronation dissolving into the fiery resolve of commanders.
"Looks like our honeymoon will have to wait, Vance," she said with a fierce, dangerous smile.
Kaelen grinned—a savage, predatory curve of his lips.
"To the stars, then, my Queen."
