The transition from the thin air of the Andes to the bottom of the world felt like plunging into liquid nitrogen.
Seraphina and Kaelen stepped out of the rift into a howling, pitch-black blizzard sixty degrees below zero. The polar winds shrieked across the endless expanse of the Antarctic Ice Sheet with hurricane fury, driving blinding needles of horizontal ice that rattled violently against their armored forms.
Yet beneath the two-mile-thick continental glacier, the earth was burning with sick, necrotic fire.
Ahead of them, rising like a jagged obsidian fang through the blowing snow, stood the caldera of Mount Erebus—the southernmost active volcano on Earth.
The crater wasn't spewing ordinary basaltic lava.
Instead, a blinding, vertical pillar of oily, deep-violet void-plasma surged three miles into the stratosphere, tearing a catastrophic hole through the ozone layer. From the summit of the volcanic peak, a yawning fissure split the glacier in half, leading down into a colossal subterranean chasm that glowed with unnatural, sickly viridian light.
"The Trench of Erebus," Kaelen shouted over the roar of the blizzard, his voice reinforced by etheric projection.
His eighty-foot shadow-wings flared into an aerodynamic wedge behind them, creating a localized pocket of stillness in the freezing gale. His obsidian doom-plate was already encrusted in diamond frost, but his molten silver eyes burned like supernovas in the dark.
"The First Cataclysm ended here ten thousand years ago! The High Kings of Caelum and the Sovereigns of the Night Court pooled their life-force to forge the Prime Seal of the Seven Spheres directly over the subterranean magma chamber!"
Seraphina’s twenty-foot wings of starlight burned with blinding, thermonuclear heat, melting the blowing ice into steaming mist within five paces of her boots.
Her amber eyes pierced the howling whiteout, scanning the volcanic rift. Her crescent mark burned so intensely at her throat that it seared through her armor collar.
"The seal is fracturing from the inside, Kaelen!" she called back, her paramedic senses tracking the seismic vibrations shuddering through the polar ice.
"The magma chamber isn't erupting—it’s being consumed! The Ashen Maw has awakened the Void-Mother’s First born to drill through the final ward!"
"Then we end this war where the first one was won," Kaelen growled, his hand drawing Gloom-Weaver. The broadsword’s dark-matter edge flared with violet lightning that hissed against the falling snow.
Together, they launched off the edge of the glacial fissure, diving two miles straight down into the steaming volcanic bowels of the continent.
They plunged through layers of prehistoric blue ice, entering a subterranean world that defied mortal science.
Beneath the two-mile glacier lay a vast, subterranean geothermal vault held aloft by titanic columns of carved, black meteoric iron. Lakes of bubbling crimson magma clashed against subterranean ice walls, filling the cavern with choking clouds of sulfurous steam.
In the center of the subterranean vault, suspended over a boiling lake of lava, hovered the Prime Seal.
It was a titanic, hundred-foot circular disc of solid celestial orichalcum, carved with the interlocking emblems of the Sun and the Moon.
Yet the disc was cracked.
Standing atop the fractured seal was the architect of the final cataclysm: Supreme Arch-Prelate Malgareth.
The creature was ten feet of towering, withered shadow, draped in ceremonial robes woven from flayed immortal souls. In his skeletal hands, he held the Spear of the Desolate Void—an ancient relic of pure anti-matter dripping with black sludge.
Surrounding the disc were a thousand Void-Knights of the Iron Spire, their barbed halberds grounded into the cracked orichalcum as they chanted a funeral dirge that shook the tectonic plate.
"Sovereign Vance! Daughter of Dawn!" Malgareth’s voice echoed through the volcanic vault like the groaning of sinking ships. "You cleansed the six outer gates, but you are too late for the heart! The Prime Seal is uncoupled! The Void-Mother stirs in the mantle below!"
Malgareth raised the spear, driving the barbed anti-matter blade straight into the center fracture of the Prime Seal.
A deafening, world-shattering crack echoed through the cavern.
The hundred-foot orichalcum disc split down the middle, and from the boiling lava lake beneath, two colossal tentacles of pure, oily darkness, each as wide as a skyscraper, erupted into the subterranean sky.
"Hold the seal!" Seraphina shouted, her wings screaming as she unslung her sunstone bow.
"Malgareth is mine!" Kaelen roared, descending upon the fractured disc like a falling star of midnight fury.
