The desert heat that struck them upon crossing the rift was an anvil of molten lead.
Two thousand feet above the Giza Plateau, the dry desert winds howled with choking waves of reddish-black dust. The midnight sky over Cairo was bathed in the sickly, blood-red luminescence of an apocalyptic blood moon. Below, the ancient cradle of mortal civilization was being ripped apart by cosmic rot.
The Great Pyramid of Khufu—the last surviving wonder of the ancient world—was no longer stone.
Its colossal four-sided limestone structure had been completely corrupted by an Abyssal Dread-Spire driven deep into its apex. The four smooth faces of the monument were bleeding cascades of boiling, black magma that poured down the stone tiers like rivers of liquid obsidian, turning the surrounding golden sands into vast, bubbling lakes of glass.
Hovering directly above the inverted capstone, an immense vortex of weeping crimson fire tore open the Fourth Leyline.
Ringing the base of the three pyramids, an army of ten thousand Ashen Maw sand-demons marched in lockstep. Clad in barbed copper armor and wielding flaming khopesh blades, they corralled fleeing Egyptian civilians toward the bubbling lava trenches, chanting in a guttural tongue that shook the bedrock beneath the Sphinx.
"The ancient solar dynasties anchored the equatorial leyline directly beneath the King's Chamber," Seraphina said, her voice tight over the roar of the sandstorm.
Her twenty-foot wings of starlight fluttered with brilliant, superheated intensity, keeping the scorching desert updraft from tossing her off course. Her amber eyes burned with ancestral recognition as her Sunblood resonated with the hieroglyphs carved into the bedrock far below.
"They built the pyramids not as tombs, Kaelen, but as celestial batteries to siphon solar dawn across the hemisphere. If the Maw turns that battery into a necrotic pump, the entire Sahara will become a dead zone of dark matter."
"Then we will extinguish their fire," Kaelen growled, his deep baritone cutting through the howling sirocco like a war horn.
His eighty-foot shadow-wings flared against the crimson sky, releasing a localized shockwave of absolute-zero void-frost that dropped the ambient temperature around them twenty degrees. His obsidian doom-plate gleamed with deadly anticipation, and in his right gauntlet, Gloom-Weaver flared with cold, violet lightning.
Suddenly, the molten glass lake surrounding the Great Pyramid erupted in a fifty-foot geyser of fire.
From the volcanic depths rose the Lord of Cinders: Pyroth-Karn.
The titan was a towering elemental nightmare of blackened magma and cracked basalt, fifteen paces tall, with burning molten lava coursing through its stony veins like fiery blood. Two massive curved horns of glowing brimstone curled from its skull, and its chest was crowned by an iron collar forged from the souls of ancient pharaohs.
In its colossal right hand, Pyroth-Karn swung a massive, jagged war-maul of burning meteorite iron that wept streams of white-hot slag into the sand.
"Vance!" the cinder titan roared, its voice an earth-shattering rumble of grinding tectonic plates that shook the tourists' hotels three miles away in downtown Giza. "You dare bring the Sun-Whore to the desert of Ra? Her light is dry tinder to my furnace!"
Pyroth-Karn slammed his war-maul into the glass lake.
A tidal wave of boiling liquid obsidian, sixty feet tall and burning at three thousand degrees, surged upward into the sky, screaming toward the descending sovereigns like a volcanic tsunami.
"I'll handle the magma!" Seraphina called out across their mate-bond.
She dove into the rising wave.
Channeling the newly integrated Heart of Susanoo from her core, her solar wings exploded not with simple dawn fire, but with a crackling, electric vortex of azure storm-plasma. She thrust both hands downward, unleashing a massive, freezing atmospheric repulsor.
The freezing gale collided with the molten magma.
A deafening hiss of pressurized steam exploded across the Giza Plateau as hundreds of thousands of tons of liquid rock instantly flash-froze into a towering, brittle wall of black volcanic glass.
Seraphina snapped her wings, soaring right through the steam cloud, her sunstone recurve bow drawn and locked on the titan's burning crown.
Behind her, Kaelen struck like an executioner's axe.
He didn't slow his descent; he plummeted from two thousand feet with his shadow-wings pinned tight, turning his massive, armored body into a falling comet of pure void-gravity.
He landed directly upon Pyroth-Karn’s broad, molten shoulder.
The kinetic impact shattered the titan’s basalt collar, sending fissures of liquid fire spraying into the night. Kaelen drove Gloom-Weaver deep into the creature's rocky neck, his molten silver eyes burning with absolute, lethal dominance.
"You speak of furnaces, worm," Kaelen roared, his voice rattling the ancient stones of the pyramids. "Now let me show you the cold of the grave!"
