The subterranean lake shattered under the sudden violence of thirty drawing blades.
The shadow-samurai moved with the silent, terrifying grace of phantoms, skimming across the surface of the luminous blue water in a fan of midnight lacquer and curved steel.
Seraphina didn't wait for them to close the distance.
With a concussive snap of her twenty-foot starlight wings, she propelled herself across the pool, leaving a boiling trail of steam in her wake. She unslung her sunstone bow in midair, loosing five plasma arrows in a continuous, lightning-fast draw.
The bolts screamed across the jade chamber, piercing the center chests of five charging warriors. The superheated plasma turned their cursed armor into molten slag, hurling their smoking bodies into the deep water before they could raise their katanas.
Touching down lightly on the central stone dais, she drew her twin sunstone daggers to protect the remaining six celestial chains holding the Heart of Susanoo.
"Come on, then!" Seraphina challenged, her amber eyes burning like molten gold as she blocked the cross-strike of two leaping samurai, their blades throwing a shower of blinding sparks against her daggers.
Across the cavern, the water erupted into a towering geyser as Kaelen and Lady Tomoe collided.
Tomoe’s twin nodachi moved with blinding, serpentine lethality. She struck three times in the span of a single mortal heartbeat—a high feint to the throat, a diagonal sweep across the torso, and a reverse thrust aimed at his unprotected armpit.
Kaelen parried every blow with terrifying, casual precision.
The five-foot blade of Gloom-Weaver was an impenetrable barrier of dark-matter gravity, ringing with deafening, metallic clangs that sent shockwaves rippling across the underground lake. Each parry carried the crushing weight of a collapsing star, forcing the fallen blade-mistress back a pace with every contact.
"You've grown slow, Vance," Tomoe hissed through the silver teeth of her demonic kabuto, her body blurring as she executed a low sweeping kick, attempting to slice his legs from under him with her left blade. "Centuries hiding in your mountain have dulled the edge of the Night Court!"
"My edge hasn't dulled, Tomoe," Kaelen growled, his deep baritone dripping with sovereign arrogance.
He didn't dodge the sweeping blade.
He brought the heavy pommel of his broadsword down directly onto the flat of her left nodachi. The localized gravity field shattered the poisoned weapon into a dozen spinning shards of steel.
Before she could recover, Kaelen’s eighty-foot shadow-wings snapped forward like titanic, barbed mantis claws, wrapping around her flanks and pinning her in place. His left gauntlet shot forward, clamping around her armored throat with bone-crushing force.
"You simply forgot what it feels like to face a king," Kaelen finished, lifting her clean out of the water with one arm.
Tomoe struggled violently, her remaining blade slashing against the adamantine plating of his chest, carving bright silver sparks but failing to pierce his enchanted dragon-scale. Her vertical demon eyes flared with frantic, desperate terror as she realized the sheer, ungodly gulf in power between them.
"The Void-Mother... will consume you both!" she wheezed through her crushed windpipe.
"She can try," Kaelen rumbled.
He slammed Tomoe violently into the base of a hundred-foot jade pillar, shattering the green stone into a web of deep fractures. With a swift, merciless twist of his wrist, Kaelen channeled an intense burst of void-gravity straight into her skull, extinguishing the traitor's corrupted spark in an instant.
Her limp, armored form dropped into the churning water, floating motionless among the ripples.
Across the chamber, Seraphina drove her white sunstone dagger through the breastplate of the final shadow-samurai. The warrior dissolved into black vapor, leaving the stone dais quiet.
She spun around, breathing hard, her gaze locking onto the Heart of Susanoo.
The storm crystal was trembling violently, suspended by its remaining six chains. Without Tomoe’s ritual to direct the siphon, the unstable storm-plasma had reached critical mass. Violent arcs of blue lightning were lashing out in every direction, fracturing the ceiling and sending multi-ton boulders crashing into the lake.
"Kaelen!" Seraphina yelled over the deafening crackle of thunder. "The core is going critical! The chains are going to snap!"
Kaelen bounded across the water in two massive strides, his shadow-wings flaring to shield her from a falling slab of jade. He stood beside her on the dais, his molten silver eyes fixed on the blinding, roaring storm-orb.
"We cannot contain this much raw ether with brute force," Kaelen said, his jaw set hard. "We have to absorb the frequency together. Sun and Shadow, perfectly balanced."
Seraphina looked at him, feeling the absolute, unwavering trust humming through their mate-bond. She reached out, her hand sliding firmly into his.
"Together, then," she whispered.
Side by side, they placed their bare hands onto the roaring storm-heart.
