The ancient moat surrounding the Tokyo Imperial Palace reflected a moon fractured by drifting embers.
While mortal emergency sirens still wailed across the outer wards in the wake of the leviathan’s demise, the vast stone ramparts and weeping willow gardens of the palace grounds were shrouded in unnatural, dead silence.
At the center of an ancient inner courtyard paved with mossy white granite, a colossal circular stone seal had slid aside into the earth.
A yawning vertical shaft plunged three hundred feet down into the bedrock, illuminated not by torches, but by the cold, rhythmic pulse of electric blue and violet ether. The air rising from the depths was crisp and scented with ozone, cherry blossoms, and ancient cold-forged steel.
Kaelen and Seraphina landed soundlessly at the lip of the abyss, their wings snapping shut in unison.
"The mortal government doesn't even know this exists," Seraphina whispered, her paramedic gaze tracing the ancient Japanese ward-inscriptions carved into the circular lip of the shaft. "These kanji... they aren't mortal calligraphy. They're etheric binding runes, identical to the ones at Mount Dread."
"Because the same hands carved them," Kaelen rumbled quietly, his hand resting on the hilt of Gloom-Weaver. His silver eyes glowed with recognition as his shadow-wings shifted beneath his cloak. "During the First Cataclysm, before the Veil was cast, the Eastern Sovereign of the Jade Court allied with House Vance to bury the Heart of Susanoo beneath this tectonic junction."
"The god of storms," Seraphina murmured, feeling the low, rhythmic hum of the artifact deep in her chest. Her crescent mark at her throat pulsed in harmonious resonance. "Azgorath’s leviathan wasn't sent to destroy the city. It was a distraction to draw us out while their infiltrators opened the vault."
"Then let us not keep them waiting," Kaelen said.
Taking her hand, Kaelen stepped off the edge into the dark.
They fell through three hundred feet of damp air, their wings unfurling at the last twenty paces to arrest their momentum with a soft rush of displaced wind.
They touched down inside a cavernous subterranean hall that defied mortal engineering.
The chamber stretched half a mile in every direction, held aloft by hundred-foot pillars of carved green jade and black basalt. Water from Tokyo Bay trickled down intricate stone channels along the walls, feeding a vast underground reflection pool that glowed with luminous blue moss.
At the far end of the hall, suspended over a central dais by eight massive chains of cold-forged celestial iron, hovered the Heart of Susanoo.
It was a jagged, pulsing orb of crystallized storm-plasma, three yards wide, crackling with arcs of azure lightning that illuminated the massive shadows cast against the jade pillars.
Around the dais stood thirty figures clad in lacquered midnight-black armor, their faces hidden behind demonic kabuto helms with sneering silver teeth.
At their head stood Lady Tomoe of the Ashen Maw—an immortal blade-master of the fallen Jade Court who had betrayed her people to the Void-Mother centuries ago. In her hands, she held twin nodachi swords coated in weeping black poison.
"You are late, High Sovereign," Tomoe’s voice drifted across the pool, smooth and cold as polished ice. "The storm has already recognized its true mistress."
With a flick of her poison-coated blades, Tomoe severed the first two celestial chains.
A deafening wave of raw, pressurized thunder rolled through the subterranean cavern, fracturing the jade pillars and sending shards of stone crashing down into the water.
"She's siphoning the storm-god's core into an anti-matter detonator!" Seraphina warned, her sunstone daggers igniting with superheated white plasma as she crouched into a combat stance. "If that crystal destabilizes, it will blow a five-mile crater straight through central Tokyo!"
Kaelen drew Gloom-Weaver, the broadsword’s abyssal edge flaring with dark-matter lightning as he stepped past Seraphina, his sovereign presence expanding until the entire subterranean lake began to ripple.
"Take the chains, Seraphina," Kaelen growled, his molten silver gaze locking onto Tomoe with lethal, predatory intent. "The traitor belongs to me."
Tomoe sneered behind her silver mask, her thirty shadow-samurai drawing their curved blades in a synchronized hiss of blackened steel.
"Kill the Sun-Brat," Tomoe commanded. "Bring me the Sovereign's head."
