Waking came not with the gentle warmth of a Chicago sunrise, but with the cold, crystalline scent of high-altitude frost, mountain cedar, and ancient stone.
Seraphina opened her eyes to an expanse of vaulted ceilings carved from solid, polished obsidian that mirrored the pale light of two twin moons hanging low in the twilight sky. She lay upon a sprawling, circular dais draped in heavy furs of silver-fox and black velvet. The bed was wider than her entire studio apartment, framed by massive, twisted pillars of dark dragon-steel etched with dormant glowing runes of shadow and bone.
Her heart hammered against her ribs as memory slammed into her consciousness:Navy Pier. The rift. The dark-winged monster with silver eyes.
She vaulted off the furs in a flash of predatory instinct, landing silently on the polished black floor. Her leather boots and jacket were gone, replaced by a simple, floor-length shift of raw silk the color of midnight smoke. Beneath the thin fabric, her skin was completely unharmed, her wrist and shoulder healed of the strain from her battle on the pier.
A massive arched balcony opened out to the northern face of the chamber. Moving with breathless silence, Seraphina crept to the balustrade and gripped the cold stone.
The breath was ripped straight from her lungs.
She was standing thousands of feet above the world, perched upon the highest precipice of a colossal black fortress carved directly into the heart of a jagged, sky-scraping mountain range. Below her lay the kingdom ofMount Dread—a staggering expanse of gothic obsidian spires, suspended crystal bridges, and glowing aqueducts of bioluminescent lavender ether cutting through deep snowfields.
High above the mountain peaks, the night sky was an impossible tapestry of shifting celestial nebulae in shades of violet, indigo, and gold. Two moons—one pale silver, the other glowing with a faint, crimson corona—orbited each other in slow, hypnotic cadence.
There was no sound of distant traffic, no hum of mortal electrical grids. There was only the howling of the mountain wind and the deep, rhythmic hum of the mountain's core—a pulse that resonated directly with the dormant heat in her chest.
"It is breathtaking, is it not?"
The deep, rumbling baritone cut through the freezing wind.
Seraphina spun around, her defensive instincts flaring. Her hands ignited, twin crescents of golden solar plasma crackling to life across her knuckles, casting a fierce, warm glow over the shadows of the bedchamber.
Kaelen Vance stood in the arched doorway leading to the inner chambers. He had shed his battle armor, wearing only a loose-fitting tunic of dark velvet laced loosely at his throat, revealing the corded muscle of his broad chest and the jagged edge of an ancient battle scar. His dark, wind-tossed hair fell across his brow, the silver streak catching the twin moonlight. His eighty-foot shadow-wings were tucked tight against his back, shifting with restless, sovereign power as his molten silver eyes locked onto her with terrifying focus.
"Keep your distance," Seraphina warned, her amber eyes blazing with sovereign fire, her knees bending into a combat stance. "You brought me here by force, Vance. If you think I’m going to cower in your bed, you're out of your mind."
A slow, predatory smirk touched his lips as he took a measured step into the room, utterly unbothered by the crackling fire in her hands.
"I have no desire to see you cower, little sun," Kaelen purred, his voice low, intimate, and dangerous as he stopped just outside the reach of her flames. "If I wanted a docile creature, I would have left you to the wolves in Chicago. I brought you here because you are the other half of my soul. And because outside these walls, every court in the Seven Spheres would kill to drink your blood."
He raised a hand, gesturing toward the horizon. "Welcome to Mount Dread, Seraphina Cross. Here, you will learn to rule... or you will burn trying."
