The word hung between them like a drawn blade: Mine.
Seraphina’s reaction was instantaneous and violent. The terror of being claimed by an ancient predator sliced through the intoxicating fog of the bond. Her Sunblood flared in desperate retaliation. With a sharp, furious twist of her trapped wrist, she sent a blinding shockwave of thermonuclear heat straight through his grip.
Dragon-steel groaned under the sudden thermal spike. The sheer heat would have turned mortal flesh to ash in a heartbeat, but Kaelen Vance merely flinched, his jaw tightening into iron contours as his grip held firm. A thin trail of black, smoking blood welled where the solar fire bit into his palm, but his silver eyes only burned hotter, drinking in her resistance with dark, feral satisfaction.
"I belong to no one, monster," she snarled, driving her knee toward his armored midsection.
Kaelen twisted effortlessly, his other hand coming down to catch her thigh, wrenching her off balance and dragging her flush against the broad, unyielding wall of his chest. His eighty-foot shadow-wings snapped forward like a living cage of midnight feathers and dark-matter gravity, shutting out the Chicago skyline, the rain, and the wailing sirens. In the enclosed darkness between them, the only light came from the molten silver of his eyes and the frantic, golden brilliance of her wings pinned beneath his embrace.
"Fierce little thing," Kaelen growled, his deep voice vibrating against her throat. His chest rose and fell in heavy, ragged rhythms as the bond between their souls thrummed with terrifying intensity. "Fight all you like, Seraphina. It won't break the resonance."
Her heart seized. "How do you know my name?"
"Your blood sang it to mine the second you crossed the threshold," he murmured, leaning down until his lips grazed the sensitive shell of her pointed ear. His breath was warm, smelling of dark mountain pine and ozone. "You think you can stay here, among these fragile cattle? Look around you. The fracture has breached the Seventh Leyline. The beasts that crossed tonight were only the vanguard. If I leave you on this pier, the Void-Hunters of the Low Courts will rip your wings from your back before the morning sun."
"And what makes your court any different?" she hissed, squirming against the crushing strength of his thighs and arms. Every point of contact between their bodies sent searing shivers of heat racing across her skin, a treacherous ache that made her breath hitch despite her fury.
"Because in my court, you will sit beside me, not beneath me," Kaelen answered, his tone dropping into a possessive, dangerous rasp that made the small hairs on her arms stand on end. "And because I slaughter anyone who touches what is mine."
Before she could summon another burst of solar flame, Kaelen moved. His hand slipped to the nape of her neck, his thumb pressing with precise, paralyzing pressure against the dormant leyline nerve at the base of her skull.
A sudden, heavy lethargy rushed through Seraphina’s limbs. Her golden wings flickered, dissolving into sparkling motes of starlight as her strength drained away. Her knees buckled, but she never hit the wet concrete; Kaelen’s arm caught her waist, lifting her effortlessly against his shoulder like a prize won in battle.
"Let... me... go..." she choked out, her vision blurring as the twilight of his shadow-realm encroached.
"Never," Kaelen whispered against her forehead, pressing a fierce, solemn kiss into her auburn hair. "Sleep, my sun. When you wake, you will see the stars of your true home."
Kaelen turned toward the weeping violet rift suspended over Lake Michigan. With a single, concussive beat of his massive shadow-wings, he vaulted into the air, crossing the dimensional threshold and plunging into the cold, jagged abyss of Mount Dread as the portal sealed shut behind them, leaving the mortal world in stunned silence.
