The heavy double doors of polished cedar clicked shut with a muffled, resonant thud, severing the frigid mountain draft and the howling gales of the Outer Rim. Inside the royal solar, the ambient chill yielded instantly to the crackling roar of the obsidian brazier, casting long, flickering tongues of amber and violet light across the tapestries of star-woven silk.
Aurelia stood in the center of the chamber, the fur-lined cloak slipping from her shoulders to pool in a dark heap upon the thick wolf-pelt rugs.
Malakor did not move from the door. He stood with his back braced lightly against the heavy timber, his arms crossed over his chest, watching her with a hooded, predatory gaze that tracked every breath she took. The flickering firelight carved sharp hollows along his cheekbones and caught the raw, unhealed scratches along the column of his throat.
"You look at me as if you expect me to shatter," Aurelia said softly, turning to face him. Her hands went to the bronze buckles of her battered cuirass, her fingers stiff and sore from hours of clutching her rapier hilt.
"I have watched empires shatter beneath your heel," Malakor countered, his voice low, scraping like rough velvet over iron. He uncrossed his arms, pushing off the timber door with slow, deliberate grace. "I do not fear you breaking, little star. I am watching the dawn ignite, and wondering how any man survives its heat."
He crossed the distance between them without making a sound.
Before her numb fingers could pry open the third buckle of her breastplate, his large, scarred hands covered hers. His touch was scorching against her cold skin, steady and immensely gentle despite the lethal strength coiled within his forearms.
"Let me," he murmured.
Aurelia’s hands fell away, her hazel eyes locking with his crimson-ringed gaze. She let her head tilt back, her throat bare to the firelight, as Malakor’s fingers went to work on the straps.
He moved with painstaking deliberation. The heavy steel cuirass fell away first, clattering onto the furs, followed by the reinforced pauldrons and the vambraces that bore the scorched scars of necrotic lightning. With each piece of armor that was stripped away, the tension in Aurelia’s shoulders began to dissolve, replaced by a deep, shivering vulnerability that belonged only to this room, to this man.
When only her thin, sweat-dampened linen tunic remained, Malakor’s hands didn't withdraw.
His calloused palms settled against the curve of her waist, burning through the thin fabric. The heat of his skin was an intoxicant, cutting through the lingering chill that the Sixth Catalyst had left in her bones. He stepped into her space, his towering frame casting a long shadow that swallowed the firelight behind her.
"Breathe, Aurelia," he rasped, his thumbs tracing slow, deliberate circles over the crest of her hip bones. "The throne is won. The dead king is dust. You are here."
Aurelia shuddered, a soft, involuntary sound escaping her throat as his fingers slid around to the small of her back, pulling her flush against the hard, unyielding contours of his thighs and chest. Her hands rose instinctively, burying into the soft wool of his arming doublet, feeling the heavy, violent drum of his heart beneath her palms.
"I spent five months running on nothing but blood and starlight," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly as she leaned her forehead against his clavicle, breathing in the scent of cedar, snow, and his dark, familiar musk. "Now that it's quiet... the silence feels heavy."
"Then do not listen to the silence," Malakor growled softly.
His hand reached up, fingers tangling deep into the dark, tangled waves of her hair, tilting her face upward. His gaze was dark, molten with an uncompromising hunger that made her pulse thunder in her ears. His eyes dropped to her lips, parting them with his heavy thumb before his mouth descended once more.
This kiss was not a desperate tether against dying; it was an unhurried, intoxicating exploration. His lips moved over hers with savage tenderness, parting her mouth with a low groan that vibrated deep in his chest. Aurelia arched into him, her hands sliding up to grip his broad shoulders, pulling him down until she was entirely enveloped in his heat.
Every inch of skin that brushed against his caught fire. The primal resonance of their conjoined souls flared between them, not as blinding light, but as a deep, suffocating undertow of shared passion that erased the cold, the war, and the thousand miles of blood they had crossed to reach each other.
When Malakor finally broke the kiss, his breathing was ragged, his eyes blazing like dying stars in the dim light of the chamber.
"Tomorrow, we ride to slaughter a hive," he murmured against the corner of her jaw, his lips trailing down to press a searing kiss into the hollow of her collarbone. "Tonight, you belong to nothing but me."
Aurelia’s breath hitched, her fingers tightening in his hair as she pulled him back to her lips. "Then take what is yours, Malakor."
