The sound of the Horn of the First Dawn rolled across the subterranean caldera like a waking thunderhead.
Deep within the subterranean galleries of the mountain, gears the size of galleons groaned into motion. The smell of petrified cedar and ancient incense was overtaken by the rich, hot tang of sulfur and molten celestial bronze as the slumbering war machines began their slow awakening.
In the royal receiving chambers adjacent to the grand rotunda, the clamor of the legion was muted to a low, distant vibration.
Here, high above the basalt avenue, the chamber opened outward onto an expansive observation terrace overlooking the snow-dusted crags of the Outer Rim. The air was frigid, biting with the mountain’s eternal frost, but inside the private antechamber, a wide brazier carved of black obsidian roared with steady, smokeless astral flame.
Aurelia stood by the stone balustrade, looking out into the starlit expanse. The cold wind whipped her dark hair around her cheeks, chilling the skin where her battle-leathers had torn during the fight with Vaelen. The six-pointed crown of frost and light had receded into her spirit, leaving her tired, every muscle aching with the phantom strain of channeling a god's inheritance.
Footsteps echoed softly on the flagstones behind her.
She did not need to turn to know who it was. The sudden displacement of the freezing air, the heavy scent of crushed ozone, leather, and dark musk announced him before the clinking plates of his armor ever did.
Malakor stepped onto the terrace. He had stripped off his chipped pauldrons and heavy war-cloak, wearing only his dark-iron arming doublet and high combat boots. His black hair was damp with sweat, hanging in ragged locks across his forehead, and the fierce lines of his face were softened by the quiet solitude of the room.
Without a word, he unclasped a heavy, fur-lined cloak of velvet shadow-silk from his arm and draped it over her trembling shoulders.
The warmth hit her immediately, deep and fragrant with his scent.
Aurelia sighed, pulling the thick fur tighter around her throat as she leaned back. Malakor stepped flush against her back, his arms coming around her waist to cinch the heavy mantle tight against her body. He pulled her flush against his broad chest, his chin resting comfortably on the crown of her head.
"You should be resting by the hearth," he murmured, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that resonated directly through her spine. "The legion will take three hours to fuel the colossi. We have time."
"I can't sleep," Aurelia admitted softly, letting her head tilt back against his shoulder. Her hazel eyes watched the silver aurora dancing across the frozen peaks below. "Every time I close my eyes, I still feel the six currents screaming through my veins. The power... it doesn't just sit in my chest, Malakor. It wants to expand. It wants to conquer."
Malakor’s arms tightened around her waist, his grip firm, grounding, and entirely unyielding.
"Then let it want," he said quietly, his lips brushing the shell of her ear, sending a delicious shiver chasing down her neck. "Power is an untamed beast. You don't beg it to sleep, Aurelia. You ride it with spurs in its ribs until it learns to obey your bridle."
Aurelia gave a faint, wry chuckle, turning slowly in the circle of his embrace until she was facing him.
The proximity was suffocating in the best way. She rested her palms flat against his chest, feeling the thick, corded muscle beneath the linen shirt and the relentless, steady thrum of his heartbeat. His hands slid to her hips, his fingers digging into the curve of her waist through the fur, anchoring her completely to his frame.
"And who bridles you, dread lord?" she murmured, looking up into his crimson-ringed eyes with a spark of teasing challenge.
Malakor’s gaze darkened, the pupils blowing wide with an intense, smoldering heat that made her breath catch in her throat. His thumb traced a path up her ribs, resting just beneath the swell of her breast, his touch burning through the leather.
"You already hold the reins, little star," he rasped, his voice dropping into a dangerous, velvet register that set her pulse racing. "You have held them since the day you bled on my altar and refused to beg for mercy."
His hand moved to the nape of her neck, tilting her head back.
He didn't wait for her to reply. His mouth came down on hers with a fierce, possessive hunger that stole the night air from her lungs. It was not the hurried kiss of an interrupted battle, but a deep, demanding claim forged in fire and absolute survival. Aurelia gasped into his mouth, her fingers burying themselves in his dark hair as she pulled him closer, meeting his raw intensity with an answering flame of her own.
When they finally parted, their breath plumed together in white clouds against the winter night.
Malakor rested his forehead against hers, his eyes burning with an unshakeable, savage devotion. "Tonight, the empire waits. Tonight, there is only us."
Aurelia smiled, the cold forgotten in the heat of his gaze. "Then take me inside, Malakor."
