The lingering scent of ozone, burnt steel, and ancient incense slowly thinned into the crisp, sweet air flowing down from the punctured ceiling. High above, the real stars twinkled down into the hollow mountain, casting silver beams across the thousands of knelt Praetorian knights who remained motionless, their halberds bowed toward the dais.
Aurelia remained in Malakor’s embrace, the heavy iron plate of his chest a fortress at her back. Every nerve in her body hummed with the pristine resonance of the unified Six Shards. The chaotic, grinding friction that had plagued her spirit for months was gone, replaced by a deep, oceanic equilibrium of raw astral majesty.
Yet it was the man holding her who truly anchored her soul.
Malakor’s breathing was slow, deep, and steady. His arms remained locked around her waist, his heavy chin resting against the curve of her shoulder. He turned his head slightly, pressing his lips to the pulse fluttering against the column of her throat—a searing, deliberate claim that drew a soft shiver from her lips.
"We have stood in ash, mud, and frozen brine," he murmured against her skin, his voice gravelly with lingering battle-heat. "It seems strange to stand somewhere so clean."
Aurelia let out a quiet, breathless laugh, turning in the circle of his arms until she faced him. Her hands came up to rest on his scarred jawline, her thumbs sweeping away flecks of black blood that had dried across his cheekbones.
"Do not grow too fond of it, dread lord," she said softly, gazing up into his crimson-ringed eyes. "A throne is only a vantage point from which to see the next war coming."
"Let it come," Malakor replied, his hands sliding down to rest heavily on her hips, his fingers digging into the leather of her armor with familiar possessiveness. "So long as I sit it beside you, I care little what armies break upon our gates."
The raw devotion burning in his gaze stole the breath from her lungs. This was the warlord whose name struck terror into the hearts of archdukes and kings, a monster of the northern wastes who showed mercy to no living creature—and yet, before her, his fierce gaze held an aching tenderness that made her heart ache with fierce answering hunger.
She leaned up on her toes, closing the fraction of space between them.
Her lips met his in a searing, demanding kiss. It tasted of copper, smoke, and cold starlight, carried by the violent heat of adrenaline and survival. Malakor groaned deep in his chest, pulling her flush against his armored body until there was no air left between them, his tongue tangling with hers in an intoxicating rhythm that obliterated the ruined sanctum around them.
When she finally pulled back, both of their breaths came ragged, mingling in the cool draft of the hall.
"Come," Aurelia whispered, her cheeks flushed, taking his hand and intertwining their fingers. "Let us finish what our ancestors fractured."
Together, hand in hand, they ascended the final tier of the basalt steps.
The First Throne stood before them, carved from the heart of a fallen star. As they drew near, the deep indigo glow of the seat shifted, welcoming the touch of the Six Shards with a soft, resonant chord of celestial music.
Aurelia paused at the foot of the massive chair, looking up at its towering backrest etched with constellations of the First Dawn.
"The seat of the High Sovereign was built for one," she murmured, tracing the cold, polished armrest with her free hand.
Malakor looked down at the throne, then back at her, a feral, unapologetic grin curving his lips. With a swift, effortless motion, he turned her and seated her squarely in the center of the star-metal throne.
"The old world had one ruler, and it cracked beneath the weight of its own isolation," Malakor said, leaning over the armrest until his face was inches from hers. He braced one gauntlet against the throne's carved backrest, casting his towering shadow over her in fierce, protective reverence. "The new world will have its Empress of the Dawn. And I will be the shadow that slaughters anything that dares approach her."
Aurelia’s breath caught as the ancient throne responded to her presence.
Blinding gold and violet light surged through the star-metal, rippling into the armrests, traveling through her veins, and expanding outward in a magnificent, continental pulse. Across the entire mountain, throughout the Outer Rim, and into the skies beyond, the dormant ley-lines of the ancient empire ignited like a string of firecrackers.
Below the dais, the thousand Praetorians struck their breastplates in unison, their voices echoing in a booming chorus that rattled the stone.
"Hail the Dawn Empress! Hail the Sovereign of the Veil!"
Aurelia looked up at Malakor, her hand rising to tangle into his dark hair, pulling him down until their foreheads touched once more.
"Our reign begins," she said.
