The silence that blanketed the rotunda was unnatural, broken only by the ragged wheeze of King Vaelen’s corrupted breath. Black bile hissed as it dripped from the shattered seam of his visor onto the basalt steps, eating small, smoking pits into the stone.
Before him stood the two sovereigns: Aurelia, clad in the blinding majesty of the Six Reunited Shards, and Malakor, a towering colossus of unbridled nether-fury.
"Ten thousand years," Vaelen rasped, his massive hands trembling as he dragged the executioner's sword across the quartz tiles to steady his footing. The broken pieces of his helmet peeled away, revealing a visage half-withered by necrotic rot, with pale, sunken flesh stretched tight over hollow cheekbones. "I preserved the gateway against the Devourer. I became the monster this world required! And you... children playing at godhood... come to steal my crown?"
"You didn't preserve this world, Vaelen," Aurelia said, stepping down the first tier of the dais with measured, lethal grace. The rapier in her grip sang with a high, crystalline vibration that caused the air to shimmer with gold-rimmed frost. "You hoarded the suffering of millions to sustain your own hollow immortality. You became the very infection you swore to repel."
"Then let us see if your new dawn can outlast the endless night!" the fallen king roared.
With a final, desperate surge of will, Vaelen crushed the pommel of his executioner's sword with his gauntlet. The weeping eye embedded in the steel shattered, unleashing a torrent of black, primordial ooze that clung to the blade in crackling sheets of dark lightning.
He lunged with terrifying speed, an eight-foot nightmare aiming a decapitating swing straight at Aurelia’s throat.
Aurelia did not retreat.
She met the strike with an inverted thrust of her rapier. The blade didn't merely deflect the blow; the newly integrated Sixth Catalyst manifested a geometric ward of hard astral light at the point of contact. The colossal executioner’s sword struck the prism and ricocheted wildly upward, throwing Vaelen off balance and exposing the unarmored seam beneath his left armpit.
"Strike!" Aurelia commanded.
Malakor was already moving.
He closed the distance in a low, thunderous crouch, Void-Reaver trailing a vacuum that sucked the oxygen from the air. With a roar ripped from the darkest pits of the abyss, Malakor drove his great sword horizontally across Vaelen’s exposed torso.
The black-iron blade cleaved through ancient steel, withered bone, and black flesh with absolute finality.
Vaelen stiffened. The executioner’s sword slipped from his numbed grasp, clattering down the basalt steps with a dull, hollow clang. The ancient king collapsed to his knees, his hands clutching the smoking gash across his chest where void-fire was already devouring his rotten essence from within.
"The Veil..." Vaelen choked out, looking up at Aurelia with fading, milky eyes. "When the... the First Throne awakens... the outer dark will see you. The True Lords... of the Void... will come..."
"Let them come," Malakor growled, stepping up beside Aurelia and resting the bloody tip of Void-Reaver against the stone. "We will bleed them just as easily."
Aurelia stepped forward, raising her left hand. A gentle, solemn beam of astral frost cascaded from her palm, enveloping the dying king. The mercy in her strike was absolute; the frost-flame dissolved the necrotic curse eating his soul, crystallizing his decaying flesh into pure, translucent quartz.
With a soft sigh that echoed like rustling autumn leaves through the quiet hall, King Vaelen shattered into glittering dust, carried away on the mountain's rising draft.
The oppressive weight that had crushed the sanctum vanished. High above, the breach in the ceiling revealed a velvet sky filled with real, breathing stars, cold and immaculate.
Aurelia stood motionless for a long moment, watching the dust settle.
Then, the adrenaline began to bleed away, leaving behind the crushing weight of five months of relentless war, siege, and bloodshed. Her shoulders sagged minutely, and she lowered her rapier, her fingers trembling slightly against the wire-wrapped hilt.
Before she could falter, strong, armored arms wrapped around her from behind.
Malakor pulled her against his broad chest, burying his face into the hollow of her neck. He held her with an intensity that brooked no argument, anchoring her weary spirit against his indomitable strength. His lips pressed a searing, lingering kiss to the sensitive skin behind her ear, murmuring words meant only for her.
"It is done, my queen," he rasped, his voice raw with emotion and possessive relief. "The First Throne is ours."
Aurelia leaned back into him, resting her head against his shoulder, letting her eyes drift toward the empty star-metal throne awaiting their ascent.
