The quiet that followed the binding of the Fifth Shard did not feel like peace; it felt like the breathless pause before an executioner’s axe descended.
High atop the Obsidian Spire of Val-Ghol, wind whipped through the crenellations, carrying the biting scent of frost and ozone. Aurelia stood at the parapet, her fingers curled tight against the freezing stone. Beneath her ribs, the core where five fractured pieces of the Veil now rested hummed with a terrifying, rhythmic pulse. It was no longer a dormant reservoir of stolen magic—it was an ocean trapped in porcelain, straining against the confines of her mortal marrow.
Every breath tasted of raw aether. Silver light flickered beneath the skin of her wrists, tracing the veins that led directly to her heart.
A heavy, fur-lined cloak settled over her shoulders, followed immediately by the heat of Malakor’s chest pressing against her spine. His arms slid around her waist, broad hands resting just over her navel. Even through the thick wool and leather, the blistering dark-flame of his presence cut through the glacial chill settling into her bones.
"You’re freezing," Malakor murmured, his voice a low vibration that rumbled against her back. His lips brushed the exposed curve of her neck, just beneath the silver-threaded hairline where the Shards' power had permanently bleached the dark strands. "And you haven't slept since the seal at the Sunken Spire broke."
Aurelia leaned back into him, letting the ruthless solidity of his frame anchor her against the vertigo spinning in her mind. "Sleep invites them in, Malakor. Every time my eyes close, the Veil speaks with five different voices. They don't just whisper anymore. They demand."
Malakor’s grip tightened, possessive and unyielding. One of his gauntleted hands moved upward, fingers splaying over her chest to feel the unnatural, staccato cadence of her heart. His jaw tightened, the sharp line of his shadow-marked throat going taut.
"Let them demand," he rasped into the hollow beneath her ear, teeth lightly catching the sensitive flesh before soothing it with a burning kiss. "You conquered the drakes of Ouros. You broke Cedric’s host and bled the Sirens in the deep. If the primordial shadows want their throne back, they will have to tear it out of your ribs—and they will have to crawl over my corpse to touch you."
A ragged laugh caught in her throat. She turned within the circle of his arms, lifting her gaze to meet his. In the dim, predawn gloom, his eyes burned like twin coals banked in obsidian. The fierce, unvarnished devotion in his stare was suffocating—a hunger born not just of desire, but of two souls forged in blood and bound by an oath carved into the world’s bedrock.
"Look out there," she whispered, nodding toward the horizon beyond the spire.
The horizon was bleeding.
Far past the jagged serrations of the Iron Crags, the sky was not greeting the sun with gold. A massive, weeping tear of violet-black void cleaved the dawn in half. Tendrils of anti-light spilled from the rupture, slowly descending toward the slumbering continent like roots seeking fertile earth. The Veil had not merely torn; the outer dark had noticed the gathering of the Five Shards, and it was reaching down to reclaim what had been stolen.
"The Gates of the Primordial Crown," Malakor said softly, his dark gaze hardening into flint. "The heralds of the First Void are waking."
Aurelia placed her hand over his heart, mirroring his touch, feeling the violent, steady beat that kept her grounded when her own humanity threatened to unravel. The heat between them flared—visceral, dark, and intoxicating, an unspoken reminder that whatever monstrosity awaited beyond the rift, they would face it as butcher and sovereign combined.
"Let them wake," Aurelia said, the silver light beneath her skin flaring into blinding brilliance as she drew upon the combined fury of the five bound shards. "We marched through ash and drowned deeps to reach this threshold. If the void wants an empire, Malakor... we will give it war."
