The aurora of silver, crimson, and gold rippled across the northern firmament for three days and three nights, an unearthly standard proclaiming to every corner of the realm that the Five Shards were whole and the Veil mended.
Now, high atop the Imperial High Throne of Sol-Vaelen, the grand Hall of Thousand Pillars was filled to its marble balustrades with the gathered lords of the continent.
The Western Host of Val-Roc, the scarred marsh chieftains of Mor-Venn, the reformed magi of the Southern Isles, and the kneeling barons of the eastern ridges stood in absolute, breathless silence. Before the towering dais of white porphyry and obsidian, forty captured battle-standards of the fallen Solar Concord lay heaped upon the polished stone like withered autumn leaves.
At the summit of the dais stood the Dual Throne.
Carved from a single meteoric monolith of star-iron and black basalt, it bore no single crown. Instead, it was framed by two roaring hearth-braziers that burned with eternal ether—one an unquenchable flame of midnight-abyssal fire, the other a serene basin of celestial starlight.
Seated upon the throne sat Malakor and Aurelia.
Malakor wore the imperial ceremonial plate of the High Sovereign, blackened star-iron inlaid with crimson runes that pulsed in slow, predatory rhythm with his breath. Across his massive knees rested his abyssal greatsword, sheathed in dragon-hide. His dark curls were swept back, his rugged features carved from the granite of twenty years of war, yet his crimson-flecked eyes held no restless hunger for battle; they burned with the calm, terrifying certainty of absolute dominion.
Beside him, Aurelia sat draped in imperial silks of midnight-blue and ermine, her slender frame adorned with a mantle of woven starlight that shimmered with the combined light of the five unified shards. The complete Celestial Core rested within her chest, its presence radiating a serene, godlike aura that commanded reverence from every soul in the hall.
Her hand rested upon the armrest of the throne, her fingers interlaced with Malakor’s large, scarred palm in an ironclad, public claim of eternal partnership.
General Kaelen ascended the lower tiers of the dais, carrying a velvet cushion bearing the shattered golden circlet of the late Emperor Valerius. He halted at five paces, dropping to both knees, his weathered voice ringing with iron authority:
"High Sovereigns of the Unbroken Realm! The legions have returned from the four borders. The rifts are sealed, the deeps are quiet, and the northern wastes have bent their knee. The realm has no other masters. All of humanity kneels before the Throne of Ash and Starlight!"
A deafening roar erupted from the thousand pillars.
Seventeen thousand soldiers and five hundred nobles dropped to their knees in unison, their foreheads touching the cold marble, their voices rising in a single, thundering chant:
"Hail the Sovereign Eclipse! Long live Malakor! Long live Aurelia!"
Malakor did not look at the kneeling court. He turned his head slowly, his crimson gaze locking onto Aurelia. A slow, wicked smile touched the corner of his lips—a private, dangerous look meant only for her, carrying the memory of the blood, the sieges, the desperate rifts, and the unbridled nights they had shared on the long road to this throne.
"Two hundred battles, my queen," Malakor murmured, his deep voice carrying only to her ears beneath the roar of the crowd. He raised their joined hands to his lips, kissing her knuckles with fierce, unyielding devotion. "And they all led to your feet."
Aurelia smiled, her starlit eyes dancing with sapphire and silver brilliance. She squeezed his hand tightly, her fingers tracing the rough scars on his knuckles.
"They led to our feet, Malakor," she whispered back, her voice layered with celestial music and fierce, unquenchable love. "We broke their world so we could forge a new one from the ashes."
Malakor rose from the throne, his towering, armored frame commanding instant, absolute silence across the vast hall. With his free hand, he drew Aurelia up beside him, wrapping an arm firmly around her waist to pull her against his flank, presenting her to the empire as his equal, his heart, and his sovereign partner.
He raised his great sword into the air, the runes bursting into a roaring flame of black and gold that mirrored the starlight blazing from her core.
"Rise, people of the empire!" Malakor’s voice thundered, shaking the very foundations of Sol-Vaelen. "The era of broken gods is dead! Today begins the reign of the Veil!"
The hall answered with a roar that shook the heavens.
High above the imperial city, the silver-and-black dragon banners fluttered against a clear, endless horizon, marking the glorious dawn of Volume 9—and the uncharted, eternal empire that awaited them beyond the borders of the known world.
